CANTERBURY HUNT CLUB.
A general meeting of members of the Canterbury Hunt Club was held on Saturday afternoon, at the Commercial Salerooms, Hereford street. The attendance was not numerous. Mr Brittan was called to the chair. The hon. secretary and treasurer, Mr C. F. Barker, read the balance-sheet, from which it appeared that during the past year the subscriptions and cap money received amounted to £312 13s sd, and the expenditure to £347 15s 2d. The deficit of £35 Is 9d thus shown would be more than met by subscriptions which had yet to come in, so that the club would begin the ensuing season in a sound financial position. It was proposed by Mr Haydon, and seconded by Mr Connell and carried—“ That Messrs Egan and Barker be requested to collect the outstanding subscriptions.” Mr Jos. Haydon thought a hearty vote of thanks would bo passed to those who during last season had acted as masters of the hounds. He called attention to the difficulties the holders of the office had to overcome in New Zealand as in the old country. In England, however, hunting was a national pastime, which was not the case here, though he trusted it would become so. The wire and gorse fences of Canterbury made cross-country riding very different. Whatever difficulties the master might have to meet, it was only right that he should be heartily supported by the members of the club. Ho moved—- “ That the hearty thanks of the club be given to Messrs Cardale and Brittan. Mr Barker seconded the motion, which was unanimously agreed to. Mr Brittan briefly acknowledged tbo compliment, both for himself and for Mr Cardale, who was not present. He fully recognised the difficulties of the position, but as hunting became more general the difficulties would become less. meeting then proceeded to elect the
officers of the club for the ensuing year. Mr Lauce was unanimously re-elected president. Mr Geo. Lee was proposed as master of the hounds.
Mr Lee moved as an amendment —“ That Mr Egan should be appointed master. He (Mr Lee) was afraid that he would not be able to attend as often as he ought. Those present endeavoured to induce Mr Lee to accept the mastership. It was at length resolved to leave the task of selection to the committee, whose choice will be proposed for approval at the next general meeting, to be held in a few days. Mr Egan was unanimously elected hon. secretary and treasurer. The following are the names of those elected on the committee ;—Messrs Lewis, Dudley, Woodman, Egan, Gresson, Orbell, King, E. Saunders, W. Saunders, Hurse, Parsons, Brittan, G. P. Williams, 0. F. Barker, A. Cox, Kimbell, Buss, Brettagh, Hay don, Lance, J. R. Pearson, George Lee, and Hammersley, with power to add to their number. It was resolved that the secretary should at once advertise for all hounds at walk to be sent in to the huntsman as soon as he is appointed. A vote of thanks to the retiring secretary and treasurer, Mr C. E. Barker, was unanimously agreed to, Mr Barker, in acknowledging the compliment, referred to the unnecessary trouble to which the town members of the committee were sometimes put through having to select the country for hunting, a duty which should be performed more frequently than it had been by the country committeemen. The subscription list for the season was then opened, and several members put their names down for five guineas each. The meeting closed with the usual vote of thanks to the chairman.
