Auckland, March 22. The following are the particulars of the drowning of three men in the Wniroa river: —At the time of the accident the boat, there being no wind, was drifting with centrehoard down, when suddenly, without a moment’s warning, it heeled over and filled, precipitating the occupants into the water, who then struck out for the shore. Frank Dalton, the only survivor, made a heroic attempt to save his brother, but failed, as when he fetched him up the third time life was extinct, and had been for some minutes, and there was no hop? of saving him. Hawkins and the other Dalton had in the meanwhile been swimming for the shore, to all appearance strongly, and when Frank pissed them lie told them, when they came into the ripple, to turn on their backs. He then thought all was right, and, after again encouraging them, and knowing (hat both were good swimmers, struck out for the bank, which he reached in a thorough state of exhaustion, not being able to extricate himself from the deep mud, and would have been suffocated but for the timely help of others. The accident was caused by the centre-board, which was let down the full length, having caught broadside on some snags alongside, which Jis some twenty feet of water, and a strong ebb tide running at the time caused the boat to heel over at once and fill, throwing all the four men into deep water. The spot was almost in the middle of the river, which is three quarters of a mile in width there. Great sympathy is felt for the two widows, especially Mrs Dalton, who has been only married six months.
