COMMERCIAL.
The Customs revenue collected here on Wednesday, 20th March, amounted to £856 17s. The items were;— Spirits, £ll2 4s 4d; wine, £4 16sj toba CO, £6O 12s 6d ; tea, £3 6s ; sugar, £244 8s Id; goods by weight, *66 10s Id; ad valorem, £l7O 18s; ■other duties, £194 2s. At the sitting of the Waste Lands Board held yesterday, 21st March, 2089 acres 1 rood were disposed of. realising £ll7B 10s. The land is situated as under: —Asnley, 12U acres; Seiwyn, 177 acres; Akaroa. 52 acres; Ashburton, 214 acres 2 roods; Geraldine, 431 acres 3 roods. AUSTRALIAN MARKETS. Adelaide,— The “Observer" reports for the week eudiug March 7th The wheat market opened weak at 6s Od to 6s at Port Adelaide. We understand that a cargo was sold at these rates, partly loaded at Port Adelaide, and to be finished at Port - Pine. Later in the week another cargo was sold at 5s bid at Port Adelaide and the Port Pirie anchorage. Since these two transactions wheat has been otleriug at lower rates. To-day large lots have been offered at 5s 8d at Port Adelaide without finding buyers. The present quotations are 5s 7d at Port Adelaide and 5s la at Port Pirie Jetty end, with a dull market. In floor very little has been doing during the week. Town brands have been ©tiering at *Lj 12s 6d, and country at £l3 and slightly under, but no sales are reported. The Sydney market i- quite stocked with both wheat and flour, and Melbourne is doing an extensive business in flour with oydney this season. The New Zealand wheat crop is said to he plentiful ana of excellent quality, and Sydney millers are shy of laying in shocks, as they are in expectation of early supplies from New Zealand, With regard to shipment to England, it may be said that with freight at 32s 6d and wheat at 5s bd f.o.b. enterprise in this direction cannot pay according to the present advices. Private telegrams from London received y esterday, and confirmed by others to-day, report a fall of is per qr. on Australian wheat. We quote bran at Is id. with more inquiry to-day than there has been during the week. Pollard is worth is 4d to Is sd. Mew Zealand oats are priced at 4s 6d to 4s bd. All are in fair demand for feeding purposes. The exmarts of wheat for the week ending March 2nd reached 1734 tons, and of flour 2014, making for the year so far a total exportation of 15,297 tons of floor and 30,470 tons of wheat. MELBOUIiSK.—The “ Argus " of March loth reports lu the import market, business has been moderately active. The leaturo of the day, however was the sugar sale ; a total clearance of the cargo ofl'ered was readily made at improved rates. Jjreadstulfs are again very unsettled, and a considerable amount of depression is allow® I to pervade the market. Wheat early in the irormng was aold at 5s 6id. a lino of 600 bugs having been placed at the price ; sfi 6d was at the same tune ofl’ered for a larger line. At auction, subsequently, 200 bugs good wheat were sold at 5s sd, and about 300 bags of medium wuro placed at 5s 2d to 5s At another auction safe wheat was offered, but owing to the very unsatisfactory nature of the biddings, the whole had to be withdrawn ; H.OO bugs of good milling were taken np privately after the auction sale, on terms withheld. Victorian leediug oats OW iower Aeout bOO bags were disposed of under the hammer, when low common wrought 3s 9d, and up to 4s 3d was realised for good iced ; ~000 bushels were also quitted at up to is id for Victorian, whilo Jfew Zealand milling, which are scarce and wanted, were disposed of at 4s bid to la Ul-Jd. Privately a parcel of feeding was placed at 4s sd, and a line of fine milling was taken at 4s bd, Inferior malting barley was cleared ofl at 5s 4d, Maize was got rid of oy auction ut 6s ; the trade quotation is now 6s Si Sag-as have hud u large business. The auction skia in the forenoon attracted a good attendance, *7,, - , , ha whole offered was rapidly cleared oil at an improvement on flue whites of 10s, and on first veliows of 10s likewise. of Gonda candles was placed at 9|d. A line of 90 bales gunnies were sold publicly at us <sd. iiio timber sales have not been so extensive; business, however, is reported. In liquids, we learn of the sale of a trade parcel of Hennessy s bulk brandy having been made at 9s Ud. Business is further pending. A small parcel of case Hennessy s was placed at 31s Id. Sales of Renault s bulk brandy have been likewise reported. The case of this brand has been taken at 22s 6d. Jamiesons Irish whiskey has realised 5s 3d.
