VITAL STATISTICS.

The following is the Registrar-General’s report on the vital statistics of seven of the principal boroughs for the month of February :

The births were 41 fewer than in January. The deaths were 38 fewer in number than the deaths in January. Of the deaths, males contributed 44 ; females, 45 ; 57 of the deaths were of children under 5 years of age, being 64 04 per cent, of the whole number; 41 of these were of children under 1 year of age. There were 3 deaths of persons of 65 years of age and over; 1 of these persons was a male and 2 females; 1 male of 68 and 1 female of 76 died at Auckland ; and 1 female of 73 tit Dunedin. At the to wns of Auckland, Nelson, and Hokitika the death-rates for February were slightly higher than for January ; at the other boroughs the rates were lower. The variation in the rates for the two months is most noticeable in Wellington, the proportion of deaths per 1000 of population hiving fallen from 2 43 in January to 1.35 in February.
