SIR GEORGE GREY AT DUNEDIN.
To the Editor of the Glohe
Sib, — I think most men will allow that you have done your best towards creating a feeling of distrust in the minds of the working men of Christchurch as to the sincerity of the professions of concern that Sir George Grey says he has for us, the general working class of this country. We can’t all command success. Time will show if you have in the above effort, finll think your leader of tonight, March 14th, 'rather \oo strong for the above working men, seeing you tack on him the acts of others. The authors of the regulations you speak of were officials of the late Government—the Government that reduced the working men’s income about £2O a year right through the country, but at the same time increased the pay of those a stop higher up the social ladder. Neither do I think you •will haye to tax your memory over heavily in calling to mind more than' once when the railway officials apd employees haye had difficulties quite as grave as the one you want to tack on to him. Sir, I'm inclined to think that f he regulation you speak about might perhaps have a beneficial effect upon the minds of some of the above employees by disenchanting them against overtime altogether au being a direct injury to those out of employ, ar a an indirect cup to themselves by the over-strain to thffir physical and Rental powers of endurance. Yours, &c., JAS. WALKER.
[Our [corrcpppn/jleuL” completely fails to answer our leader ot yesterday, It is the Government, not the off!finis, who are “e----sponsible to the public for the manner Jn which the railways are managed. The compulsory signing of these obnoxious regulations took place long after the Grey Cabinet came ypto poorer, and several men because they 7 refused to do so. Nor oau the Ministay shelter themselves under the plea hhat ithone rubles were the work of subordinates/ because influential public meeting, held in January, oalle.i' their attention to the matter, and they could, had they wished, ordered their' withdrawal —Eu.
