INCIPIENT BERRYISM IN NEW SOUTH WALES.

There is a very strong feeling amongst a section of the working classes in New South Wales against Government promotion of immigration. At a recent crowded meeting held in Sydney under the auspices of “ The Trades and Labor Council of New South Wales,” the following unwise and ungrammatical resolution was unanimously adopted : “ That in the opinion of this meeting the introduction of immigrants into this colony at the public expense is opposed to sound policy, and begs to enter its protest against the placing of any sum on the estimates of 18,78 for the purpose of immigration.”. In speaking to the above resolution, which was supported on the ground that by encouraging immigration a “ suicidal Government” would “ drive away the provident working man,” an enlightened speaker remarked that “ He knew men who could neither read nor write that could discuss these political questions far superior to the argument of some of the newspaper articles. We had the boasted culture [of Mr Windeyer, but had s'qt the leading, social reformers sprung from the platform of the working classes ?- The fact was, these papersjdid not'giye |thc worksing man a fair chance. In Victoria they have shown that these would be autocrats were not going to stop the progress of the colony. And we knew that the spirit was fast coming across the border. The New South Wales people were imbibing the spirit of Victoria, and were now pi-aying for a Berry.” [Cheers ]
