NORTH OTAGO RACES. [By Telegeaph.] [EEOM THE COEEESPONDENT OX' THE PEESS ] Second Day. OAMARU,0 AMARU, March 12. B]tori commenced to-day with the Hurdle race, for which nearly every starter had friends. The North Island horse, Shark, wou pretty easily at the finish, and Sbillelngli ran a moderate second. After a Selling Hack Hurdle race the Publican’s came on for decision, and with Bob Ray, riding Fishhook, he was justly fancied. He won us ho pleased. For the Flying Handicap ho was again pulled out, and again won, this time having his stable companion Luna as attendant. The following is a summary of the day’s racing : Handicap Hukdle Race —75 sovs, with a sweep of 3 povs, to go to the second horse. Nomination, 2 sovs; acceptance, 1 sov. About 21 miles. Mr McCoy’s br g Shark, aged, lOst (Owner) 1 Mr Powell’s b g Shillelagh, aged, 9st 101 b (Cotton) 2 Mr Lnnn’sg c Merry Monarch, aged, 9at 71b (Hawkins) 3 Mr Andrews’ c g Banjo (T. A Selling Hack Race was the next item on the programme, and then came the Publicans’ Handicap. All four acceptors were nibbled at, though probably Ariel and Hook had the most supporters. Ray rode the latter, and, if anything, he was the best favorite in the paddock. After Maritana had made all the running she was capable of, Fishhook came to the fore, and Ariel being disposed of, at the turn the eon of Traducer and Laurel won easily at the finish from Maritana; Ariel a fair third. Hippo was never dangerous. Publicans’ Handicap — loo sovs (start at 1.'5 o’clock), with a sweep of 2 sovs, to go to the second horse. Nomination, 2 sovs; acceptance, 1 sov. Mr D. O'Brien’s b g Fishhook, 5 yrs, 9st 31b (Ray) 1 Mr Lunn’s b m Maritana, aged, Cst Gib ... 2 Mr Eedwood’s b h Ariel, 5 yrs, 9st 121 b ... 3

Nomination, 1 sov; acceptance, 1 sov. Distance, 1 mile. Nomination same day as North Otago Turf Club Handicap. Mr D. O’Brien’s b g Fishhook, 5 yrs, Oat Gib 1 Mr O’Brien’s ch f Luna, 3 yrs, Gst 21b ... 2

The Consolation Race was won by Luna, but might have been otherwise only that Maritana’s saddle turned completely round.

Consolation Handicap—4o sovs (start at 5 o’clock). For all beaten horses at the meeting. Distance, If mile. Post entry, 1 sov. Mr O’Brien’s ch f Luna, 8 yrs 1

This wound tip a capital meeting, although there was very little speculation.

OXFORD RACES,

[Br Telegbaph ] [fEOM THE SPECIAL EEPOETEB OF THE PBE3S.] Oxfoud, March 12. The Oxford meeting came off yesterday, and, favoured with beautiful weather and a good attendance, the races went off well. The sport, which taken throughout was good, commenced with the Hurdle Race, for which live came to the post, and which was appropriated by the veteran Ivanhoe, after a close finish with Young Diomedes. Lemon Juice fell. The Maiden Plate was a gift to Satan, an old local favourite, and the Cup turned out to be very much the same for Cast Steel, a complete outsider. Fairy Queen w r as virtually left at the post. Defamer bolted during the race, and Manuka was not made enough use of during any part of the race. Had he been ridden as he was last year, he would, I think, have repeated his victory. Little Maid, who ran into a place, seemed a good little mare, while Spencer and Diaphantus were outpaced. The Farmers’ Plate was an exercise canter for Young Diomedes, and, after a Hack Race, in which Bird Catcher easily defeated his four opponent, three came out for the Consolation, which

Defamer won easily all the way ; The various officials wore very successful in their respective duties, but the events were scarcely started so punctually as usual. I append details : Handicap Hurdle Race of 20 sovs. Two miles. Mr J. J. Dawson’s b g Ivanhoc, aged, list 121 b (including 51b over-weight) _ (Lunn) 1 Mr A. Shcenau’s b g Lemon Juice, aged, lOst Olh (Owner) 0 Harlequin cut out the work, followed by Ivanhoc, Satan, and Young Diomedes in the order named, Lemon Juice bringing up the rear. In this order they jumped the first hurdle and ran to the back of the course, and from thence to the stand, where Harlequin was still in command, the rest, however, having improved their positions. At the turn Lemon Juice came through his horses, and, closely followed by Ivauhoe, led to the hurdle at the back of the course, which he struck and foil heavily, Harlequin jumping on him as he landed. Ivauhoe was now leading, with Satan and Young Diomedes close up, Harlequin being last. At the turn into the straight Satan’s bolt was shot, but a capital race home ensued between Ivanhoe and Diomedes. The old horse, however, stayed the longest, and won by half a length, Harlequin a moderate third. Maiden Plate, of 15 sovs ; weight for age. One and a quarter miles. Mr H. Moody’s r g Satan, by Quicksilver, aged, fist 81b ... ... (H, Murfit) 1 Mr J. Mullin’s hlk g Darkle, aged, 9st 81b (G. Gibbs) 2 Mr J. Fisher’s dig Starlight, 3yrs, 7st 121 b (J. Martin) 0 Starlight was the first to show in front for a few strides, but was immediately supplanted by his two opponents, who raced neck and neck at a clinking pace to the back of the course. Here, Darkie dying away, Satan came on, full of running, and won in a canter. Oxford Cup, of 30 sovs. Two miles. MrM. Duncan’s g m Caststeel, by Traducer Creepmouse, 4 yrs, 7st 91b ...(R. Parsons) 1 Mr G. Cone’s hr g Manuka, aged, 9st 71b (G. Cone) 2 Mr A. M’Quillan’s ch f Little Maid, 3 yrs, 6st 71h (J. Martin) 3 Mr H. Vallance’s b li Defamer, aged, Bst9lb (8. Osborne) 0 Mr S. The lot got nicely away together, with the exception of Fairy Queen, who threw her rider. When they had fairly settled to their work Defamer was seen making play in front of Little Maid and Caststeel, the rest in a ruck about two lengths behind. With very little alteration they kept those positions to the stand, where Defamer, who was leading comfortably, made a determined bolt into the saddling paddock, throwing his rider Osborne, Caststeel and Little Maid led till past the turn, where Manuka made his effort, but dying away almost directly left Caststeel in possession of a strong lead. Little Maid was disposed of a quarter of a mile further on, the grey eventually won by two lengths from Manuka who came again a bit at the finish. Little Maid was third, and the rest beaten off. Time—4min. 15scc. Farmers’ Plate, of £7 10s; lOst; one mile. Mr Humphrey’s hr h Young Diomedes, by Diomedes, syrs ... ~. ... (Monk) 1 Mr Gundry’s ->g Tommy, aged ... They ran thus to the second jump, where Satan refused, and was out of it. At the back of the course Diomedes went to the front, closely followed by Harlequin, but at the last hurdle but one (he former refused, leaving the!issue to Ivanhoc and Harlequin. The two jumped the the last hurdle together, and both were ridden out from this to the finish. The old horse, however, finished best, and just won by a neck. This brought the day’s proceedings to a close.
