CORRESPONDENCE

To the Editor of the (-Jlohe. Sie,—l shall feel obliged if you will kindly allow me space to correct an erroneous statement made by me last night in the City Council with reference to Mr Cuff. I stated, on what I had every reason to believe was good authority, that Mr Cuff was taking fees from the ratepayers to oppose the increased assessments made by the Council. My informant came to me this morning and explained that his statement was erroneous. He intended to have said that “he should employ Mr Cuff,” not that “ he had employed Mr Cliff.” It is therefore only right that I should at once place this explanation before the ratepayers, in justice to Mr Cuff, who naturally feels greatly annoyed at such a statement having been made, as being calculated to do him an injury. In conclusion, I beg to disclaim any such wish or intention. Yours, Ac., CHARLES E. BRIGGS. Christchurch, March I2th, 1878.
