COMMERCIAL.
The Customs duties collected here on Saturday, March 9th, amounted to £277 6s. The items were;—Spirits, £9O 10s lOd ; wine. £23 3s 3d ; ale (in bottle), £6l ss; tobacco, £2l 15s; tea, £2O 5s ; sugar, £SO 5s 2d; goods by weight, 15s 9d; ad valorem, £8 16s; other duties, 10s. At the sitting of the Waste Lands Board hold on Monday, March 11th, 1616 acres 3 roods were disposed of, realising the sum of £3233 10s. The land is situated as follows ;—Ashley, til acres ; Selwyn, 41 acres; Akaroa, 18 acres 3 roods; Ashburton, 670 acres ; Geraldine, 81 acres; Waimate, 365 acres. E. W. Eoper reports on his Saturday sale of 9th March:—Horses, 21 entries—Market very dull; good draught horses not realising owners’ reserves. Vehicles—Enquiry for second-hand carts, which sell at good value. Cattle, 46 head yarded—Calves, 1 to 6 weeks. 12s to 27s ; 4 to 6 months, 10s to 555; cows (milch), £9 to £lO 10s; cows (old), £5 to £5 3s. Pigs, 195 yarded—Market remains dull; previous rates obtained. Poultry—Full supply. Fowls, 2s (Id to 4s 3d per pair ; ducks, 3s 6d to 4s 9d; geese, 5s 6d to 7s ; hen turkeys, 8s ; eock turkeys, 6s to 8s each. Produce—Potatoes, £2 10s per ton ; cheese, 5d per lb ; bacon, 6-£d per lb ; butter, 9d, in keg. ■
