SPORTING.

NORTH OTAGO RACES. [Br Telegraph.] [from the special correspondent of the PRESS.] First Day. Oamarh, March 11. Beautiful weather favored the N.O.J.C. for their annual gathering. There was a very numerous attendance, and the racing was fair throughout, though there was a lot of time wasted, and the length of time between the various events was absurd. Racing commenced at twelve, and it was after five before the horses were saddled for the Tradesmen’s Handicap. Ariel and Bide-a-Wee were the favorites for the big race, but Maritana was also supported, and Fishhook had a few friends. For the Tradesmen’s, Tilania and Foul Play were most fancied, Isaac Walton being also nibbled at. The other events were of merely local interest. The following is a summary of the events:—

Betting—5 to 4on Ariel, 2to 7 against any other.

Fishhook had the worst of an indifferent start, and Blue Peter and Maritana alternately led until it came to racing, when Dan O’Brien took Fishhook along. There was a collision at the turn, but from that out the race was reduced to a match between the two top weights, and Ariel won a good race home by a neck. Time—3min. 18^secs.

They got away to a fair start, but Foul Play and Blue Peter soon went to the front, and cut out the running to the last turn, when Titania assumed the command, which she retained all the way home, and won easily by a length. Tin’s finished a fair day’s sport.
