UNITED C.C.C. vTmIDIAND C.C.C. This match was played out on Saturday last, and resulted in an easy victory for the senior club. It will be remembered that on the previous Saturday each side had played an innings, the Midland having made 56 against 98 by the Urated. On Saturday last the former, therefore, commenced their second innings with 12 to the bad, and owing to the destructive bowling of Ashby, they made a very poor stand, only making 7 runs more than in the first innings. The first ball from Ashby sent Wood back, and the next hit Allen’s leg stump hard, but strange to say the bails diil not fall. However, when the score showed 12, a splendid break back from the same bowler dismissed .Mien. Macdonnell only stopped one ball and then made place for Morice, but again Ashby proved irresistible. E. Fowler joined J. Fowler, who had been playing steadily, although uncertain at first, and a stand was expected, but a shooter from Ashby caused a separation before E. Fowler had become accustomed to the wickets, wh‘,ch, were very dead. Austen was unable to stop a good one from Ashby, but Reeder, after a narrow escape of being vim out made a good stand with J. Fowler and gradually the score increased until the required number were obtained to save the innings defeat. J. Fowler hit more freely, making three 4’s very quickly, one a really grand hit off Frith. The ball was wide of the off stump, but it went well round. (G square leg, aiucb to the oi the

batsman—however, as some one remarked, it counted. Reeder soon afterwards was numbered among {lie victims to Ashby. Fuller did not like his first, but Reeves made 5 by a good drive off Frith for 3 and two singles before Ashby again proved destructive. Horner came, but was soon run out, the total at the fall of the last wicket being 63—J. Fowler carrying out his bat for a well-played 35. Ashby was in fine form, and clean bowled all bis wickets. Frith bowled well, but was unsuccessful, the wicket being too dead. The United sent in Ashby and Ollivier to make the 22 runs required. Fuller commenced to Ollivier, who scored a single off his third ball, and Ashby cut the last well for 4. The first from Morice, a half volley, went for 4, the next for 2, and the last for a single, all to Ollivier. After six overs had been sent down 21 runs were made, making a tie, and in the next over from Fuller Ashby hit the third grand]}- to the on for 5, thus winning the match by ten wickets and 5 runs. The fielding, with a few exceptions, was good, but Ollivier should have been run out had the ball been thrown in better. At tins time the United had only 13 runs. The match on Saturday next will be England against the Colonies, which will be the concluding match of the season, and it is to be hoped that it will be as good as the first time it was played. It would be a pity if this, the most successful season of Canterbury, were not closed by a good match. The following is the score : M.C.O.C. Ist Innings, 2nd Innings. J.
