NEWS OF THE DAY.
The Jones' Case.—The hearing of the case against Geo. Jones, jun., for libel on Mr Whitaker, will be commenced in the Supreme Court, Dunedin, on Monday. Railway Tebminal ChabgeS. . Elsewhere will be found a notice of an increase in the terminal charge on goods of certain classes, to be made at the Dunedin, Christchurch and Invercargill.stations on and after Monday next. Tbamways Company.—A conference was held yesterday between the City Council and a deputation representing the Tramways Company. The proceedings took the form of a conversation, and the results will be reported to the City Council on Monday next.
Fiee Bbigade Picnic. —The members of the Christchurch Fire Brigade held a picnic yesterday at Governor's Bay. They arrived at Lyttelton by the 9 a.m. train and proceeded to their destination per steam launch Lyttelton. They returned to .Christchurch by the 6 p.m. train, having spent a very pleasant day. Congbegational Chubch. The Rev. B. T. Hallowes will conduct the services at Trinity Church to-morrow. The collections will, we understand, be devoted to the church building fund ajfc Timaru, where Mr Hallowes' services have been" greatly appreciated.
The Goods Traffic at CHEiSTCHtrBCH.— The goods truffle at the Christchurch station just now is bewildering to the mere spectator. The goods shed from 9 a.m. to 5 p.ni is alive with men loading and discharging. Indeed the preßS of work is so great that the accommodation for the workmen is found to be quite insufficient, and no doubt great, inconvenience is occasionally suffered by those who are anxious for a speedy delivery of their goodß. But for the able management of those in charge there must have been a perfect block during the early part ol this week.
Onic&W.—A watch was played yesterday between St. Matthew's and'Britannia Clubi, which resulted in an easy victory for the former by one innings and "six wickets to spare. The latter made 55 runs iu their two inning's. The return match between Pbess and "Times " will take place to-day on Latimer square. Play will oonimenoe at a p.m. sharp, and players are'requested to be punctual. The following will represent the Pkebs :—A. Ashby, <J. Brunt, F. Gibson, T. Marr, F. Maurice, R. Maurice, G. Robinson, W. Rice, W. 11. Smith (ouptain), A. Woledge, and J. Pethrick. Emergencies—A. Maurice and J. Rice.
The Late Fire— Since the enso to which we referred yesterday was made'public, his Worshin the Mayor has been applied to on behalf Of a man named T. W, Martin, livuig in St. Asaph street, and who is incapacitated from work. A portion of his house was destroycd by the fire, and the loss to a family which is dependent on the efforts of the mother alone is considerable. We are glad to learn that several sums have been torwarded to his Worship for the young people mentioned in yesterday's issue. Kaiapoi Island.—On Thursday evening last a deputation of the principal residents on St. Helena met at the house of Mr H. Vale to present Miss Jones, who for some time has acted as postmistress, with an acknowledgment of her services. The testimonial took the form of a dresßing-case and card-case, which were handed to that lady hy the chairman of the deputation, and she made a suitable reply thanking them.
Cust Presbyterian Sunday School.— A meeting of the teachers was held on Wednesday last, at the Orange Hall. The secretary reported that there were fifty-six children in attendance. It was resolved that the children's treat should take place on some day to be determined on at next meeting, and that they should be taken to Oxford, and there join the Oxford Sunday school. The teachers undertook to collect subscriptions to defray the expenses of the treat, and also to purchase books for the children, to be given out the Sunday afternoon following the treat.
