H. Potts, Esq., and J. T. Rouse, Esq., J.P.’s.l Weights and Measures. —The following persons were charged by Mr Walsh, the Inspector of Weights and Measures, with having in their possession unstamped and incorrect weights and measures and fined as follows : D. Mahar, one unstamped yard measure, fined 20s and 4s costs; Thomas Wheeler, two weights unstamped and a broken scale, fined £5 and costs 4s ; W. Cook, six weights, light, £8 and costs 4s ; John Stevenson, a scale weighing light, 'fined £5 and costs 4s; R, Anderson, three unstamped measures, fined £1 and costs 4s ; Langdown and Judge, steelyards incorre. t, fined £5 and costs 4s ; Carter and Co , weighing machine incorrect, fined £5 and costs 4s; J. GK Fyfe, one 28cwt. weight 10 drams light and another one 12 drams heavy, fined £5 and costs 4a. Lunacy from Drink.— W. Tissard and 0. J. Trucker were discharged from custody, having recovered from the effects of their drinking bout. Breach of Publichouse Ordinance.— Patrick Cain, licensee of the Harp of Erin wine and beer house, was charged, on the information of constable Dineen, with supplying liquor without other refreshments, and further with keeping his house open for the sale of liquor during prohibited hours. Mr Et. N. Nalder appeared for the defendant. The evidence of constable Dineen went to show that at 7 50 p.m., on Sunday, Feb. 24th, he visited defendant’s house, found several persons standing in the passage. On going into one of the rooms he found five persons sitting there with beer in front of them. Some of them were residents in Lyttelton. At this stage of the case, Mr Nalder said he must take objection to part of the charge, as tire notice served by the police on defendant did not include the charge of supplying liquor without refreshment. Thß Bench allowed the objection ; the other part of the charge was proceeded with. The evidence of three witnesses having been taken, the Bench fined defendant 40s.
