VITAL STATISTICS OF 1877.

Wo take the following from the “New Zealand Times,” the “ Gazette ” in which the statistics referred to were published not having come to hand : The Registrar-General’s report on the vital statistics of the principal towns in the colony for the year 1877 has just been published. The following table gives the general results:—

The number of births registered in these boroughs in 1877 amounted to 8618, Kg-inst 36117 m 1876; a decrease of 19 on the number of births in 1876. The deaths in 1877 amounted to 1329, against 1482 in 1876; a decrease in 1877 of 153 deaths, or at the rate of 10 3 per cent. The death rates were considerably lower in Auckland and in Christchurch in 1877 than in 1876, having Fallen in Auckland from 24 93 per 1000 of population to 16 68, and in Christchurch from 22 63 to 15-50 The deaths in Dunedin decreased from 17 24 per 1000 of population to 13 87 ; but in Hokitika, in consequence of the largo number of deaths from scarlet fever (numbering 40, or 46 per cent, of the tot al deaths in the borough), thereto rose from 17 77 to 31‘78. In Wellington the rate varied little, but remained somewhat high, having been 19 74 in 1876 and 19 50 in 1877. The deaths in the boroughs of children under 1 year amounted in 1877 to 407. or 1125 per cent, of the births, against. 13 77 per cent, in 1876, and 18 per cent, in 1875. The deaths under 1 year amounted to 30 62 per cent, of the total deaths, against 33 8 in 1876, and 30 8 in 1875The deaths of infants under 1 year to every 100 births were as follows during the last

Typhus and typhoid b-vers caused 32 deaths in the boroughs in 1877, against 44 in 1876 Of these deaths the largest number in any locality occurred in Wellington, the number having been 11; but still one less than in 1876 The deaths in this citv under 5 years of age comprised 95 females and 82 males. In this proportion Wellington differs from other parts of the colony, the total deaths under 5 years being 325 males and 292 females.
