UNITED CANTERBURY O.C. ▼ MIDLAND CANTERBURY O.C. This match, tho third between these two clubs, was commenced on Saturday last, and it was expected that from the absence of several of the most prominent players in the old club a better match would result, than on the two former occasions, but owing to some unaccountable cause there were two or three absentees on the M.C.C 0. side, and they were therefore not so strong as was expected. The batting display on both sides was feeble, E. Fowler and Morice alone showing any good play for the junior club, while Godby, Ashby, and 0. Fritli only, made any resistance against the attacks of the opposing bowlers. The M.C.C.O. were first to bat, and also were soon all out for the small total of 56, E. Fowler 13, W. Blake 10, and Morice 9, were the highest scorers, Ashby was not to be denied, and the wickets fell very quickly before bis attacks—the first four falling in his first three overs. Ashby and Godby made a good stand for tho U.C.C.C., and the scoring during their stay was very rapid. The former was the fi’-st to leave, having made 28 by fine free hitting, his score being made by a 5, two 4’a, three 3’s, two 2’s, and two singles. The second wicket fell for 52, when Hartland joined Godby, and after ten more had been added to the total Godby was bowled after playing a good innings for 29, in which were a fine straight drive for 5, a 4, two 3’s, two 2’s, &c. The fall of wickets became very fast now, and the innings only realised 98, to which C. Frith contributed 11 by a 4, two 2’s, &c., and Mathias 9 not out, made by a4,a 3, and a2. The match will be continued on Saturday next, the M.C.C.C., who are 42 to the bad, commencing their second innings. The following are the scores:—
