* Christchurch Water Supply. —During a lengthened interview held this morning between his Worship the Mayor and Mr Clark, C. E., the latter gentleman accepted the position of considering the schemes for a water supply to Christchurch and suburbs which might be submitted to him. The City Council will meet again this evening to go through the remainder of schemes sent in. Oddfellows’ Hall. —The “New Zeabinder ” again appeared last night. The number of spectators was somewhat small, no doubt on account of the great attractions offered at the theatres. Those who were present heartily applauded this colonial rival of Blondin. Suez Mail.— Messrs Dalgety, Nichols and Co. have received a telegram to the effect that the Ringirooma arrived,and the Arawata left Melbourne on Wednesday, the latter with the Suez mail. Boys’ High School — A sketch design and plan for the proposed Boys’ High School, submitted at yesterday’s meeting of the Board of Governors, was approved, and authority given to the College Committee to call for tenders without delay. The cost is not to exceed £6OOO. Increase of Crime.—The calendar for next criminal session, to commence on Ist April, will be the heaviest we have had for some time. Already there are fourteen prisoners committed for trial—some for serious offences. lu one case there are six indictments, and in another three. Sanitary Committee,— At a meeting of the sanitary committee of the City Council held yesterday, the question of the scavengering of the whole city, and the distribution of the new night soil pans was discussed at length. A sub-committee was appointed to draw up a form of contract which will be submitted at a further meeting next week. Christchurch Horticultural Society. The autumn show of this society will be held on Tuesday next, at the Oddfellows’ Hall. A new feature has been introduced in the form of an art union, for which very valuable prizes have been presented to the society by members and friends. Each holder of a shilling ticket obtains a chance of a (prize and has also free admission to the exhibition. Gaiety Theater. —This place of amusement was crowded to excess last evening, on the occasion of the complimentary benefit tendered to Mr C. Wallace. An excellent programme had been provided. The first part contained some very pretty selections, which were effectively rendered. A number of new sketches were introduced, which kept the house in roars of laughter. Mr Wallace was warmly received on his appearance, and received a recall once or twice during the evening. Christchurch City Council, The Council met at 4 p.m, yesterday to inspect the schemes sent in for supplying the city with water. The members present were—His Worship the Mayor and Councillors Pratt, Jameson, Ick, Euddenklttu, and Briggs. It was decided to go into committee, consequently the proceedings could not be reported. It may be mentioned, however, that so far as the schemes have been opeued the sources of supply were confined to the Heathcote and Wuimakariri, and that the estimates of cost were greatly below what they were generally expected to be, Found Drowned.—As Messrs Fahey and Cosgrove, contractors for clearing the river, were working about four o’clock yesterday afternoon opposite the Chester street Fire Brigade station, they saw a body lying face downwards about the middle of the river, in about eight feet of water. After dragging the body up it was given in charge of the police, who identified it as that of Stephen Saul Brjghting, who had for. years been following the occupation of fish-hawker, and subsequently bottle gatherer. Brighting had been seen under the influence of liquor early the previous afternoon, and about flye o’clock was observed by two boys to be sitting on the bank of the river—about twenty-five yards from where the body was found—with his feet in tlqe water, and haying all thp appearapee of being fntoxieafcefl. ipeceased' had been drinking heavily for some time past, and an information against him was to be heard on Monday next for assaulting his wife. A purse containing fls fid was found on the body, which was removed to the morgue. At the inquest, held this afternoon, the evidence produced confirmed the above facts, and a verdict of “Found drowned” was returned. Harvest Thanksgiving, St. John’s.— The first harvest thanksgiving festival of this season was held last evening in St, John’s Church, which was very tastefully decorated with sheafs of corn, flowers, grass, and frpiff Over the Communion table was a large sheaf bound with flowers, smaller one? with flower? and grass' being fastened on the choristers’ seats. Each side of the chancel and the end of each pillar was similarly ornamented. The desks were also prettily decorated with flowers and fruit. The font deserves special mention.
