* DUNEDIN JOCKEY CLUB RACES. Eiest Day. [By Telegraph.] [from the special reporter op the press.] Dunedin, February 28. The general opinion that the alteration of the date of the meeting would militate against the attendance did not turn out to be correct, as the public mustered in very fair numbers. The weather was all that could be desired, and the arrangements made by Mr James were, as usual, very successful. The course, it must, however, be said, was very rough, and in this respect there is room for improvement at future meetings. There were rather small fields for the various events, and the racing was scarcely, perhaps, up to the average. The proceedings commenced with the Maiden Plate, for which, in the absence of Swede, Oberon walked over. Eight weighed out for the Dunedin Cup, and of these the three favorites, Ariel, Templeton, and Hippocampus were eagerly scanned by their respective followers. The great Northern favorite scarcely seemed himself, and, as the sequel showed, could not have been in anything like Cup form. Ariel was a bit on the big side, and Templeton was very pink, as indeed was his stable companion Titania; Bribery seemed rather fretful and a little off colour, and Longlands, though healthy and well, was a bit short of work. Unknown was pretty fit, while Cloth of Gold was quite the reverse. Chancellor was in fair condition, and for a mile and threequarters ran a good horse. The race requires but little description. Templeton waited in from behind his stable companion, Titania, and Chancellor, for about three parts of the distance, when the bolt of the latter was shot, and the rest of the field disposed of, except the two Chokebore lodge representatives, Ariel and Longlands. The latter looked formidable at the turn, but though ridden out to the last inch by Clifford, only succeeded in finishing a moderate fourth. Ariel was third, but Bay’s two representatives, Templeton and Titania, won at the finish with something in hand. Only two came to the post for the Newmarket Stakes, and after a very close race Xantippe won by a length and a half from Swede, who was freely supported at 2 to 1. A quartette faced the starter for the Publicans’ Handicap, and for this Trump Card was a strong favorite. He justified this confidence by winning by half a length from Isaac Walton, who made the riming until a quarter of amilefrom homo. Punga, who was fancied by a good many, was disposed of after going half a mile, from the effects probably of her recent accident, and Oberon was completely outpaced. The Champagne Stakes produced three starters, and Captain Douglas was supposed to be a good thing. The bettor bred Atlantic, however, who was much on the gross side, won at the finish very easily, Amulet, the third competitor, being completely out of tiie bunt. Only three came to the post for the Selling Race, which was won by the veteran Exile. Sir William, who was rather a favorite, fo-oke down on the race. Betting—s to 2 against Ariel, Templeton, and Hippo 100 to 10 Longlauds and Titania, 100 to 8 Bribery, 100 to 5 Cloth of Gold, 100 to 3 the rest. Owing to the vagaries of Bribery and Chancellor, there was a considerable delay at the post, but the flag fell eventually to a fair start,o£ which Templeton on the inside had however a hit the best. As they passed the stand Templeton and Chancellor, with Longlauds and Unknown in close attendance, were in front. To these succeeded Titania, Hippocampus, and Unknown, with the others close up. At the turn Titania came through her horses, and took the command from her stable companion, while Unknown and Hippo improved their positions, and Cloth of Gold was already out of it. At the back of the course Hippo went up to Titania, the two racing about a length and a half in front of Templeton and Chancellor. Next came Longlands and Unknown, followed by Ariel. In this order they ran the next mile, when Hippo compounded, and Ariel began to go up. Coming into the straight Templeton and Titania held a good lead, and Ariel passed Longlands, on whom Clifford was already at work, but from this the race was never in doubt, the old horse winning his second Dunedin cup by a short length from his stable companion Titania; Ariel was a fair third, Longlands finished fourth, and the rest were beaten off. Time — 3min. 59sec. Newmarket Stakes, of 60 sovs. ; entrance 3 sovs; One mile and a distance. Weight for age. D. After passing the turn Punga. went up, but dying away at ftie hack of the course was passed successively by the favorite and Oberon. Half-a-mile from home Clifford took Trump Card to the front, and waited in front of Isaac from thence to the finish, winning comfortably by half a length from Isaac; Oberon an indifferent third.
