CANTERBURY AGRICULTURAL AND PASTORAL ASSOCIATION.

A meeting of the committee of this association was held yesterday at 2.30 p.m. Present —Messrs Xorman (vice-president), Duncan, Money, Ferguson, Alport, and Gar forth. The sub-committee appointed to consider whether it would bo desirable to incorporate the association under the provisions of the Agricultural and Pastoral Societies Act, 1577, brought up the following report:— The committee beg to report that, after a perusal of the Act, they are of opinion that it would be advantageous to bring the association under the provisions of the Act, as it would give it a recognised legal status and afford to the association considerable facilities for the transaction of its business and the management of i s property. It would also ensure the annual report of the proceedings of the association being laid before both Houses of the General Assembly, and information as to its operations would be thus disseminated. The sub-committee recommend that the question should be submitted to the general meeting of the association, with a proposal that the necessary stops should be taken for its incorporation under the Act above mentioned. John Hall, Chairman. On the motion of Mr Alport, seconded by Mr Money, the report was adopted. On the motion of Mr Duncan, seconded by Mr Ferguson, it was decided to hold the next general meeting of the association at Mr H. Wilkin’s salerooms, on Thursday, 21st March at 3 p.m. The Chairman said the next business would be to appoint auditors for the current year. Mr Alport moved—“ That Messrs J. Inglis and C. C. Aikman be requested to act as auditors for flic year 1878.” Mr Garforth seconded the motion, which was agreed to. The Chairman said the committee would have now to consider the question of the pound, possession of which would bo given up to the association on the 31et March next. The Secretary said he had written a reply to the Commissioner of Crown Lands accepting possession of the pound after the date mentioned. A letter was read from Mr Allison, the present poundkeeper, offering to retain his tenancy if permitted by the association. In reply to a question, the secretary said the present rental received was £2O 15s per annum. Mr Duncan suggested that it would be as well to leave the incoming committee to deal with the matter. In the meantime he thought it would bo advisable to enter into an arrangement with Mr Allison for three months, which would give the new committee time to consider whether it would be desirable to continue the pound in its present position or not. If found necessary, the date could of course he extended afterwards. He would move—“ That as the committee ai’e about leaving oflice they do not think they would be warranted in extending the tenancy of the pound for a longer period than three months from the 31st March next; that Mr Allison be informed of this, and his offer be accepted for that time at the same rental paid by the General Government, with a suggestion that he make application for a further extension to the committee to be elected on the 21st March.” Mr Ferguson seconded the motion, which was agreed to. A letter was read from the Kaiapoi Farmers’ Club, thanking the association for the loan of the dynamometer used to test the reaping and binding machines at the late contest held there, Messrs Coates and Co. wrote forwarding amended designs for the association’s medals. One design was accepted, and the secretary was instructed to order twenty-five medals. After passing a number of accounts for payment, the meeting adjourned.
