MAGISTRATES’ COURTS.
* CHRISTCHURCH, Thursday, February 28. [Before GK L. Mellish, Esq., R.M.I Drunk and Disorderly. —Mary Clint, charged with being drunk and using obscene language, was fined 20s; and a first offender was fined ss. Vagrancy. —Michael Ryan was charged with having insufficient lawful visible means of support. Accused had been remanded on a previous occasion, on his own recognizance, until the 11th of February, to give him an opportunity of getting work, but he did not then appear, and he was arrested on Wednesday by Detective Benjamin. When told the charge he said he had been travelling all round , the country, and had only been, alno to get four days’wprk at Rangiora. ’Sergeant Wilson deposed to having seen the accused loafing about public-houses in town, in a half-drunken state, since he was last before the Court. A daughter of his, who had gone astray, had attributed her misfortune to her father always following her from one situation to another. The accused told his Worship that he was very anxious to go to work, and that he believed he'could’get a job if allowed to go to it. His Worship adjourned the case for forty-eight hours, to giye Him an opportunity pf obtaining employment. Seq-lected Children.— William Bain and John Bain, aged ten years and nine years respectively. were charged with being neglected children under the Act. It was shown that the mother of the boys, who had six children, and had been receiving charitable aid, was living with a man who had five children of his own. Both families resided in a small threeroomed house, and the children were allowed tp rpn gbpwt the e[reets, in a dirty neglepted state, to the annoyance generally of thp neighbours. Complaints were made that tho boys before the Court had been caught killing fowls and destroying other property. His Worship ordered the eldest boy to be sent to the Industrial School for four years and the other for five years, to be brought up in the teaching of the Church of England.
