The natives with King Tawhiao are about to build a large pa at the Rapids, near the s ttlement. Tawhiao arrived there yesterday t superintend the work. The meeting at Hikurangi Jwith Sir G. Grey is expected to take place at the end of March. Gisborne, February 26. A disturbance, unequalled in Gisborne for its lawless character, occurred to-day. The aggressors were a party of laborers employed by Mr Lawrence, the business manager of the late Captain Bead. The dispute was in connection with the ownership of houses and a town section sold by a Maori to Mrs Kate Wyllie. The case came before the Court recently, when Captain Read’s agent failed to show any title to the land. To-day, however, they endeavored to destroy the house by bringing a large party of men with screw jacks; axes, picks and' shovels to leyel the house with the ground. Without a moment’s warning the chimney was pulled down, and the inmates had to seek refuge in the streets. The street is now strewn with furniture, and a mass of debris fills the rooms. The natives came to the rescue of their relative, Kate Wyllie, who has purchased the property from the chief Paora Kali. Over a hundred people were present, and at one time bloodshed aeomed imminent;. To-night the natives will camp -on thb ' land po prevent another similar attach ELLIN<STf)N, February 26. A r clerk sitting in one of the rooms belonging to the Native Department was alarmed by the smell of smoke, and roused the messengers, who in abopt a minute had the hose ready. Upon chopping through the wood-work, which was found very much charred inside, the fire was found to have originated in a corner between the first fiat and the ground, but how has not yet been ascertained. Mr Barton was released from gaol to-day*. There was no demonstration.
