Last night's heavy showers have done the course a great deal of good. This morning the hurdles were removed, and the whole course thrown open. Eay stripped Templeton and Titania, and sent them three miles slowly, and then to the general astonishment brought out Pungawerewere, whose injury proves to be not so serious as at first feared. She went twice round at a steady pace, but shows a decided soreness, and I should think she is an improbable starter. Ariel and Bribery were sent the Cup distance fast, the former having a considerable pull over the mare. Hippocampus went twice round stripped. The pace was not fast, the last round occupying 2min. 13sec, but still he made a good deal of noise. French gave Izaak Walton a short gallop. Luna and Oberon went about a mile and a half a regular docker in the centre of the course, and the last round was done in the excellent time of lmin. 59sec. Longlands, Foul Play, and Trump Card started together, and after going the Derby distance the la3t two eased off, and the big gelding finished the two miles by himself. All three went strong and well. The uncertainty as to what will represent Redwood's stable in the Cup race is getting less by degrees, as Orange Lightning was scratched to-day at 12.55. Two veterans, Banjo and Exile, made their first appearance, and went a good long spin in clothing. Wattie took Atlantic round once, but the colt did not appear to go kindly. Cloth of Gold and Chancellor wero sent a mile and a half together, the chesnut pulling over his companion, but neither going in a very taking manner. Eclipse went two miles in good style alone, and Unknown followed suit. This Cup outsider has not improved so far as pace is concerned, two rounds in the centre of the course occupying 4min. 23secs. Sir William and Theodore wero among the new comers, and they went a steady gallop on the tan. Most of the cross country horses arrived, and Hurdle Race and Steeplechase promiso to be interesting contests. Starlight worked on the tan and went over a few hurdles. Little Dan and Warwick went three times round the tan together and over the hurdles. Ray took Shillelagh three times round the course at thrce-quurfor speed. Old Sir ' ! atton was sent by Stewr.rfc a waddla two or three times round, and Haynes worked Kildare also on the course. Amulet went a nailo or so, his boy having all his work to do to keep him straight. The morning's work was wound up by Swede, the Virginia colt and Captain Douglas, going a smart three-quarters of a mile, which distance they covered in about lmin. 32secs. In the betting market Templeton lias come into such strong demand that he is as good a
favorite as Hippocampus. Ariel is next in demand, and scarcely anything else but these three is enquired for. The following are the quotations: — DUNEDIN CUP. 3to 1 agst Tempieton. 3to 1 agst Hippocampus. 9 to 2 agst Ariel. Bto I agst Longhuds. 100 to 1.0 agst Bribery. 100 to 10 agst Titania. 100 to 5 Oberon. 100 to 5 tgsi Cloth of Gold. 100 to 5 agst Luna. 100 to 3 agst Pinigawcrewore.
