ROAD BOARDS.
AVON. The Board met on Feb. "oth. Present— The chairman, and Messrs Munro, pickinson, and Iladfield. The surveyor's report was read and considered. An impression having got abroad that some of the members of the Board were unfavorable to the formation of a tramway, it was directed that in the report it should be stated : That the members of the Board were unanimous in agreeing to afford every facility to the company compatible with the interests of the ratepayers. The collector was instructed to get in all outstanding rates at once. Mr McAlpine interviewed the Board and asked if he could be allowed earth from the road now in course of formation by his property. Ho was informed that it was not probable there would be more than sufficient to form the road, but in case of there being any to spare he could have some. Mr Barlow saw the Board, and asked to, hare a footpath formed on the north side of the Harewood l-oad'from the station to the'corner opposite Jackson's. The surveyor was instructed to have the work done. With regarfl to, the diahes on'ejtanmqreroacj, the instructed to see in wpat way the water can fee diverted, so that the ditch'can be filled in, and report on same ne*t meeting. Mr Mitchell's proposal re shingle from his pit was considered, and clerk was instructed to reply. Tenders wore received for shingling roads on section 213 B, and that of Mr Mairs was accepted. It was decided by the Board to have a lamp erected at the top of the Springfield road, and tin o!erk was instructed to communicate-with the "Gas Company on the subject.' The contractors for the Sawyers' Arms road saw the Board and asked for an extension of tiirje to finish thoii< contract. It was decided to grant an extension of one month. Messrs Barker and Corscr saw tho Board and asked that a further portion of the New Brighton road might bo shingled a length of 65 chains. The clerk was instructed I to inform them that tho Board, taking into consideration the amount that has been already spent in the neighbourhood, oanop.t see their v/ay to do tho work at 'present, bi;t will do so as soon as possible, Mr J. E. Brown, chairman of the Tramway Company, interviewed the Board and requested them to appoint a sub-committee to confer with the company upon tho terms of agreement. Messrs Wilson and Hadfield, with the purveyor were appointed. Letter was receive! from Mr Deßourbel re River road, stating that a person was willing to fo.tn Jie iOuO, end erect a bridge oy.fr .tho-creek for' ; yhe sum of £100;.' "The c^erk'was instructed fgTfW that if the perepn named would agree to do the work the Board would give £75, if done under tho supervision and to the satisfaction
of their surveyor. Letter was received from the Drainage Board, asking to be supplied with a copy of the assessment roll. Tho clerk was instructed to reply that a copy would be supplied upon the same terms as last year. Accounts to the amount of £389 18s 2d were passed and ordered to be paid. HEATHCOTE. The Board met at tbe usiul hour on Thursday last, the 21st instant, at the Board office, Ferry road. Present —Messrs W. Attwood (chairman), R. Clephane, J. Sanclford, T. Q-. Moule, and W. Hawker. The minutes of la-t meeting were re-id and confirmed. The clerk reported the receipts for the fortnight to be, from all sources, _l4 4-s. Bank balance, £lO7 6s lid. Also, that the value of rateable property in the district, as per valuation list for 1878, wis £40,089, and that forty-seven notices of appeal had been lodged. The Hon. Q-. Buckley interviewed the Board, asking them to reconsider their vote of £25 to the Lyttelton and Heathcote Recreation Trust. The Board considered that, considering the number of works that were urgently required to be done in the district, they could not increase the amount. Mr E. J. T. Ford also interviewed the Board, offering to give land to widen the River road from Opawa if the Board would undertake to form the same. The matter was deferred, so that members could view the road. Mr R. Vincent askod the Board to open up the River road at Opawa by tho bridge, so that ho could get to his placo with stock. Referred to works committee to report The following correspondence was read and considered :—Mr R. Stevens, re drain in Phillipstown. The letter to be referred to Drainage Board. From Drainage Board, re copy of valuation list. The ch-rk to reply. A number of tenders were opened, and one accepted for each of the works advertised. Accounts amounting to £215 4s were passed for payment. The Board then adjourned.
