SCHOLARSHIPS. The Secretary reported that, in accordance with the direction he received at the last meeting, he had sent a telegram to. Wellington informing Government of the balance in hand available for scholarships. In reply, Mr Batlance had sanctioned the announcement of the scholarship examinations for June, provided such examinations should be in accordance with the provisions of the Act and the Orders in Council; Buch orders not interfering with the subject matter of the examinations. He (the secretary) had replied, pointing out that (he Act could not be carried out exactly, as the College and Girls' High School are not under Government inspection. He asked if the Government would be satisfied if the Act was followed as closely as possible. To this a reply had been received that the Act must be complied with. The Board determined to arrange for the requisite inspection. TEACHERS' EXAMINATION. The following statement showing the result of the late teachers' examination was laid upon the table. Jno. Inglis, Esq , Chairman Board of Education. Sir,—l have the honor to submit the results of the examination of pupil teachers of the firßfc and second years, held on the 15th and 16th inst.
; Forty-six candidates presented themselves for , examination. Of th se twenty-nine were pupil teachers of the second year and sixteen of the \ first year, and one was candidate for appoint- , ment. The general results are by no means satisfactory. Of the iorty-six who took the examination, seventeen failed to obtain the minimum number of marks required to satisfy a very low standard for passing. It is scarcely necessary to speak of the work in each subject, except that arithmetic, though perhaps the most important subject, is the most unsatisfactory. A few of the papers are really good, but the majority give abundant proof of either inefficient instruction or want of ordinary v application. A copy of the questions set is appended. The papers worked by the candidates are submitted with this report, and I would recommend that they be returned to the teachers. The examination in sewing was conducted by Miss Perry. Her report is appended, and the results are' incorporated in the general lists. I have, &c, Henry W. Hammond, Inspector of Schools. CORPORAL PUNISHMENT. A letter from. Mr Exall, assistant teacher of the East Ohristchurch school, was read. It asked for a full enquiry into a charge made against him of having ill-used a son of Mr Zachariah. For this he had been in the first instance suspended by the local committee, ard afterwards his salary had been reduced by £lO a year. In justification of his having punished the boy, Mr Exall pleaded that chastising with a stick or cane was a common practice at the school. The Secretary informed the Board that the local committee had assured him that corporal punishment was unknown in their school. After some discussion, the Board resolved to recommend Mr Exall to seek an appointment in another school, as, after what had taken place, it was not desirable that he should remain at the East Ohristchurch school. After the transaction of some routine business, the Board adjourned.
