It is understood that the Government having decided that the telegraph officials should receive the increases to their salaries which were withheld for a period, have also decided that all civil servants shall receive in a lump sum the increases duo on their salaries since the beginning of the financial year. A “Gazette'’ just published gives Dr. Hector's report on the gold reef in Queen Charlotte’s Sound, and the Phcenix Mine, Collingw 3od. One sample in the former yielded Jblozs. 20dwts. per ton; another, 3ozs. 16dwts. Specimens from the latter yielded. 22ozs. 7dwts. per ton. Nelson, February 14.

parent could not compel any other relative to contribute to their support. He also expreesed strong doubt whether, upon a proper construction of the Act, looked at as a whole, infant children could, under any circumstances, be held to bo destitute persons. Timaru, February It. At a meeting of the Timaru Harbor Board to-day it was resolved to write to Sir J. Goode, to ask the terms ho would require to visit Timaru and consult with the Board re the breakwater.

("from the correspondents of the press.] Waiau, February 14. Sir Orocroft Wilson succeeded yesterday in turning 3000 young salmon into a tributary of the Hurunui. Only six out of the lot were lost.
Timabu, February 14. At the meeting of the Harbor Board to-day the Engineer submitted a report and plan of the progress he had made in the proposed work of 300 ft. of the mole, and stated that ho would have the specification ready in three weeks or a month. He also recommended that a store for cement should be built andean apparatus for testing the cement, a steam crane and other plant provided. It was resolved to instruct the engineer to prepare plans and collect information regarding the steam crane and other plant referred to in his report, and lay the same before the next meeting of the Board. After a lengthy discussion the following resolution was carried by the casting vote of the chairman: —“ That the chairman be requested to communicate wit h Sir John Coodo, with the view of ascertaining on what terms ho would visit Timaru for the purpose of advising the Board with regard to the proposed breakwater.” It was also resolved “ That the Board’s solicitor be requested to ascertain the power which the railway authorities have in preventing people from crossing the railway line.” A heavy sea is running in and the schooner Cleopatra is in some danger.
