INDIAN FAMINE RELIEF FUND.

A meeting of subscribers to the above fnnd was held yesterday afternoon at the Council Chambers. Present—His Worship the Mayor (in the chair), Messrs J. Ollivier (treasurer), J. Gapes, and F. Haskins (secretary). Mr Ollivier said there was £270 in hand, which had not been appropriated, and it would now rest with subscribers to decide how this balance was to be distributed. He regretted there was not a larger attendance. The final balance sheet showed that the total subscriptions received amounted to £5340 15s Id. The remittances had been as follows :—To Madras per Bank, £4900; Sir Cracroft Wilson's draft, £100; Bank charges, £lO 15s 4d; "Lyttelton Times," £2O 5s 4d; Pbess, £2l lis 4d; payment of sundry accounts, £9 6s 6s, by credit balance at Bank, £254 3s 4d ; in hand, £24 13s 3d; total, £5340 15s Id; credit balance, £278 16s 7d. A conversation followed as to the best means of disposing of this money. The Secretary read a letter from Mr JameBon, hon. treasurer of the Canterbury Female Befuge, asking the meeting to consider the i claims of that institution in the disposal of ti'\e balance. . ifter some remarks the following distribution was determined on, subject to the consent of the various contributing districts :—Christchurch, £150; Ashburton, £35; Timaru, £4O; Akaroa, £ls; Kaiapoi, £10; Waimate, £2O; total, £270; leaving a balance of £8 16s 7d to pay outstanding accounts and petty expenses. . Mr Gapes suggested that a portion of the balance should be expended in publishing the names of subscribers whose names have not yet appeared. It was decided, however, that it was hardly necessary to go to this expense. Mr Ollivier said he was going down South in a little while, and also to Akaroa, when he would submit the scheme of division resolved .on by the meeting. After the passing of a vote of thanks to Mr ©lblvier as hon. treasurer, Mr F. Haskins as hon. secretary, and the Press for the publicity •f iven to the meetings of the committee, the imeeting adjourned.
