CHRISTCHURCH HOSPITAL.
To the Editor of the Globe. Sir, —I heard many opinions expressed last, evening and to-day (hat in your sub-leader of yesterday's issue you let down Mr Floyd Collins somewhat too easily for his unchristian treatment of that unfortunate woman sent to him late on Sunday night. Mr Collins shields himself, for his action behind a clause of the regulations drawn up by (he late Uosphal staff. This is highly amusing to those who know some of the little workings of the institution under Mr Collins’a rule, as fortunately for that gentleman’s view' of things this is the first instance of the kind that has occurred since his advent; but as for the “other” regulations, will Mr F. Collins kindly say whether they are and have been as stric'ly adhered (o by him ? Will Mr Collins distinctly assert that there is no place in the whole of that largo building where a poor woman on a cold dark night with an accompanying note from a surgeon of ld"ge experience, saying that “she is even >lo>v in labor,” could not have been received for a few hours. If not how is it that rooms can be found, apart from others, wherein to punish patients who have taken a few draw* of a pipe “contrary to regulations.” In Mr Collins’s letter to your contemporary (portion of which you quote) he speaks of having adopted a certain line with regard to Statements made by himself and the manner
ho conducts the hospital; meaning by this that he had treated them with contemptuous silent*?. Well, sir, there are a good many xu this city who know that this was about the wises course that Mr” Collins could have taken for himself. Had he done otherwise, the public would have known sooner what they arc now most likely to do in a little while. I have barely broken the ice in this Ic. ei, and should Mr E. Collins deign to icply shall go a little further into facts ; if ne does not do so I shall ask you, Sir, to give me space so that the citizens who -pay so much out of their subsidy towards fho support or that institution shall know how well and economically Mr Collins manages. Yours, &c., WONOPHTU.
