ROAD BOARDS.

RICOARTON. The ordinary meeting of (his Board was held on Monday at the office, Upper Riccarton. Present—Messrs H. J. Hall (chairman), H. Nunweek, Wm. Boag, John Deans, A letter was read from the engineer to the Drainage Board in reference to the foul state of a culvert under the Riccarton road, near the railway gates. The Surveyor was directed to examine the culvert referred to. A letter was read from Messrs Hanmer and Harper stating that a summons had been taken out against Donoughy and Smith for non-fulSll-ment of their contract for metalling the Middleton road. The Chairman stated that fresh tenders had been invited for metalling this road, and that he had accepted that of Whittington and Yates. The Board approved of the action of the chairman. A letter was received from H. Matson and Co., stating their intention of opening a Corn Exchange and Farmers’ Club at Tatteraalls’ in the first week of the new year, and enclosing circulars and forms for the signatures of intending subscribers. A letter was read from the Avon Road Board (in reply), re cost of Harewood road footpath, and referring this Board to their reply, dated October 7tb, 1876. A. circular was read from Messrs Bain and Warner, notifying that they were prepared to advise on engineering works, &c. A letter was read from Mr W. Yeitch of Pnpanui, asking the Board to metal a few chains of road fronting section No. 1000, as it became very bad in winter. The surveyor was directed to have the work done. A petition presented by Mr Nunweek was received from owners and occupiers of section No. 130, known as Hill Morton township asking the Board to take over, and form the streets intersecting the said section. The Board having considered the petition, it was resolved —“ That on the roads referred to being dedicated to the public free of cost, the Board will carry out the necessary works.” A letter was read from the Under Secretary for Public Works, Wellington, <tc, re exchange of roads through and adjoining section No. 199, and stating that before taking any further action in the matter, the Minister will require the memot rial referred to in section 25 of the Public Works Act to be forwarded to him. The chairman read a draft of the memorial, which was approved and signed by the Board, and it was resolved —“ That the memorial to bo presented to his Excellency the Governor re roads through and adjoining section No. 199 be row sealed by the Board.” Mr Boag gave notice that he would move at the next meeting—“ That the resolution passed on the Ist October, 1877, in reference to the payment of contracts be revoked.” Mr Philpott waited on the Board, and asked if he would be allowed to metal Matson’s road with the surplus gravel on the Wairapa road. The Board granted the request conditionally. The Board took into consideration the quantity of metal required for the maintenance of the main roads througii winter, and it was resolved that tenders be invited for a number of works. The monthly report was rend end approved. The surveyor was directed to fence off the Spring hole, near Cutler’s, and to have the approaches metalled, also to repair the east side of the Avon Head road from the Coal track to the bridge, and to repair the river road from Buckley’s bridge to Senick’s, also to give notice to the occupiers of land on the Sawyers’ Arms road to clear off the gorse preparatory to the road being formed full width. After passing accounts, the Board adjourned until Monday, the 4th March.
