CRICKET.

ELEVEN OF AUSTRALIA V. FIFTEEN OF CANTERBURY. Second Day. After two wet days on Monday and Tuesday, (Ins morning did not look at all promising lor cricket, as showers kept passing over Christchurch, and it was evident that the ground would he very wet and sloppy. This was thought to be much against the local team, as there were but four wickets to fall on the Canterbury side, and our bowlers were not considered likely to come off on a dead wicket. Play was advertised to commence at 1130, at which time, however, there were very tew spectators assembled on the ground Play commenced at a quarter to 12, at which time a, bright sun was shining. E. Fowler and \V. Frith went to the wickets, and the latter received the last two balls of Kendall’s unfinished over in safety. E. Fowler faced Spofforth and drove him for a single the first ball. Frith slipped him for ditto, and Fowler fluked him for another. Kendall then delivered a maiden. Frith scored another single in the slips, and Fowler sent the fast man away past longstop for 4. 110 up. The first ball of Kendall’s next bowled W. Frith ; the telegraph showing 113 —ll—2. G. Lee came in and E. Fowler drove Spoff orth for 2. A bye was next run off the same bowler. In Kendall’s next over B. Fowler was caught at the wicket, 116—12 8. Fuller filled the vacancy. Lee cut Spofforth for 1, and Fuller moved him for 3, causing 120 to appear just as 12 struck. Fuller then received a maiden from Kendall. Lee now cut Spofforth beautifully through to the slips for 4. Fuller was the next to score, sending Kendall to log for 3, and Lee slipped him for 2. Spofforth then sent Fuller back to the pavilion, the board showing 129 —l3—6. C. Frith was the last man, and not’ning was expected from him, as his hand was disabled, but be managed to get 1 from Spofforth, and 130 was telegraphed. Frith now faced Kendall, who sent him down a maiden. Lee sent Spofforth past point for 3, a very nice cut, and next skied Kendall to leg for a couple. Frith survived another over from Spofforth, and Kendall bowled a maiden to Lee. The end now came as Spofforth pot one past Frith, and the innings closed for 135, or 89 runs on. Lee took his bat out for a dozen made in very nice style. The innings was finished at a quarter past twelve. The following is the score : Canterbury, first innings. M. Godhy, b Spofforth 0 A. M. Frith, 1, b Spofforth 1 Bye, 2 ; leg byes, 3 5 135 The ground was cleared at a quarter to one, a fresh wicket having been selected. The Canterbury team was disposed as in the previous innings. Leach, however, had not arrived on the ground, and Hail land fielded as substitute for him. The two Baunermans were, as usual, the first to handle the willow for Australia, Ashby led off the bowling from the northern end, and the younger Bannerman took the strike. The first bull was bowled at 1 p.m., and A. Bannerman was the first to score, getting 2 to square-leg from the third ball of Ashby’s over. O. Frith took the ball at the other end, and opened to C. Bannerman, who got a single off his third, the ball being badly fielded. The elder brother placed Ashby for 1 in that howler’s next over, and cut Frith for 1 to [follow. lie repeated the dose to Ashby, and a bye was stolen from the next ball, and another single also came in the same over. C. Bannerman then put Frith to leg for 2. 10 up. Another one resulted from the last ball of the over Two more were got in the slips off Ashby’s, and he then bowled wide, the first of the match. Frith was then sent to square-leg for 1 and to the off for 2. Ashby sent down a maiden. Frith’s next produced 1 to the elder Bannerman. Ashby was credited with another maiden. Twenty came up from a leg hit of A. Bannerman off Frith’s bowling. Charles then drove Ashby straight for the same number, and got another single in the same over. He then cut Frith for 1, and put Ashby nicely to leg for 2 twice following. 30 was hoisted after C. Bannerman had put Frith to leg for 3, and the batsmen were well set. E. Fowler had his fingers injured in Ashby’s next over, and retired to the pavilion, Ollivier donning the gloves and taking stop, long-stop’s services being dispensed with. This, however, was only for a few balls, as Fowler again appeared on the scene. W. Frith relieved his brother at the southern end, and off his second A. Bannerman gave a very difficult chance to J. Fowler at square-leg,which he could not secure. Another leg hit from Ashby resulted in a single. W. Frith bowled a maiden. Fuller went on in place of Ashby and the last ball of his over clean bowled the younger Bannerman, the board showing 351 —11. Horan as before came in on the fall of the first wicket. Frith’s next over was spoilt by a single credited to C. Bannerman, but after driving Fuller for 2 in his next he was well caught at the wicket by E. Fowler, the last ball of the over. 38—2—25. Spofforth now appeared, and his partner received a maiden from W. Frith, and Fuller sent one down to the long Sydney player. The adjournment for lunch now took place.

Play was recommenced at ten minutes three, when the attendance appeared to number nearly 4000 persons, Leach had arrived, and was thus enabled to field for Canterbury. Horan received the first over, a maiden, from W. Frith. Fuller was punished for 2 in the slips by Spofforth, and the same batsman got a fluky single next ball. Four overs now telegraphed. Spofforth cut 1 hard to point off Frith, which was splendidly fielded by Moore, and no runs resulted. Five maidens followed, and then Horan drove Fuller to the off for 3. Ho then sent Frith to leg for a couple. Spofforth then drove Fuller for 1, and Horan cut him for the same number. Frith again bowled a maiden, and so did Fuller, Runs were now coming very slowly, neither batsmen being able to get the bowling away. .Again did Frith send down a maiden, but Fuller’s next was spoilt by a drive for two by Spofforth. 50 up. Horan

skied W. Frith to square-leg for 2, a bad hit, but there was nobody there to try for the catch. He added another from the same over, the ball going in front of square-leg. Horan then sent one of Fuller’s forward and owing to a misunderstanding was very nearly run out. Spofforth then sent the howler for 1, hut the judging of the runs obtained was most indifferent. Frith was driven to cover-point by Spofforth for a single, and Horan put him to leg for the same number. Lee now relieved W. Frith with the ball, and Spofforth sent him for one, the second ball, but the rest of the over produced nothing more. Another single was credited to Spofforth from Fuller’s first and Horan sent him to square-leg for 2, bringing 60 up. Spofforth then fell a victim 1o Lee, who bowled him with the first ball of his next, (il—3—lo. Gregory was his successor, and played the rest of the over, which was a maiden. Fuller bowled another over of the same sort, and so did Lee. Horan drove Fuller for 2, and put him to leg for a single in the next. He then played a maiden from Lee, and 0. Frith went on at the northern end, starting with a maiden. Horan put Lee forward for 1, and put Frith to leg for 1. The following is the score : Australia, SECOND INNINGS. A.
