He did the same to Spofforth in his next, and snicked Garrett for ditto. Leach then'fell a victim to Spofforth in that bowler’s next over. 24—1 —3. Moore now cam" in and received the last hall of the over from the Sydney howler. Garrett howled a maiden. Moore now drove Spofforth for l,and Ollivier snicked him for a like number. Ollivier next added a single from Garrett’s bowling and Moore placed him for 2. 30 now came up from a drive for a couple by Ollivier off Spofforth, and he smote the same howler for 3 next hall. Garrett then howled a maiden. Moore cut Spofforth for a single and Ollivier served him the same way. Ollivier (luked Garrett in the slips for 1, and a leg-bye in the same over added 1 more to the score. Moore skied Spofforth for 2, bringing 40 up on the telegraph. Two maiden overs followed. A leg-hye from the fast howler was the next item, and Olliviflr sent him to square leg for another 4 amidst great applause. Spofforth had his revenge the next hall, which I clean howled Ollivier, who had made 30 in very free style. 55—5—3(5. J. Fowler was the’ next to come on the scene. Boyle relieved Garrett at the north end, and Moore put him neatly away for 3. Fowler broke his egg by driving Boyle for 1. Moore then put one of Boyle’s into Gregory’s hands and the hoard showed—s 9-■ 6—13. Neilson now emerged from the pavilion ami Ist cheering from both sides. Spofforth and Boyle each bowled a maiden, and the former sent Fowler’s leg stump flying in his next over. 59—7 1. D’Emden followed Fowler and snicked Boyle for a couple in that bowler’s next. Spofforth and Boyle each howled a maiden, but D’Emden cut the first-named for 3 in the following one. D’Emden was the next to go, being caught off Boyle by Bailey. 64—8—2. Baker then came in, and after Neilson had received a maiden from Spofforth, he cut Boyle for a single and Neilson followed his example, and then drove Spofforth for one. Baker sent the same bowler to leg for 3, and Neilson placed the last ball of the over for a single. Ho then snicked Boyle for a couple. Baker added another single off Spofforth, and Neilson got another in the same over, the run being cleverly stolen by Baker. The next addition was another little one by Neilson from Boyle, and he then slipped Spofforth for one, which was followed by a drive by Baker for 2. Neilson then drove Boyle finely for 4 and 80 was telegraphed. A leg-hye was the next score, and another bye was shortly afterwards added. Neilson smote Boyle for 1, and got another off Spofforth, Baker then sending him for ditto, and Neilson again serving him in the same manner. The latter then drove Boyle to the on for 4, bringing 90 up. Baker then made a fine leg-hit off Spofforth for 4, and drove him for 2 the following hall. Kendall relieved Boyle at the northern end, and Neilson drew him for a single, bringing 100 up, with cheers from all parts of the ground. Three more were added by a squareleg hit of Neilson’s, and Baker got a lluky single in the slips. Neilson drove Spofforth for one, and the howler sent Baker hack next hall. 105—9 —15. The retiring batsman had played good cricket for his score. The veteran E. Fowler came next, but Neilson went directly afterwards, the board showing 105 — 10 —20. He was caught at the wickets by Blackham, and retired to he greeted with great applause from the spectators, which was decidedly deserved. Mr Neilson had shown remarkably good cricket for his score, playing all the good balls, and punishing most of those that were off the wicket. As it only wanted some three minutes to 0 p.m. the stumps were drawn for the evening. The feature of the Australians play was the bowling of Spofforth, the wicket-keeping of Blackham, and the really splendid fielding of the younger Bannerman, hut otherwise there was nothing very remarkable in our visitors exhibition of the game. Play was to have been resumed this morning hut owing to the heavy vain, the match was postponed till to-morrow at 12.30. The following is the score of the Canterbury team: —
