The following notice of an incident already referred to in these columns appears in the.“ Euro&Mu 1 At a recent meeting of the London of Directors of the New Zealand Slopping Company (Limited), the Chairman, B. P. W. Miles, Esq., presented to Mr S. C. Baumgartner, third officer of the company’s ship Pinko, a valuable sextant, in recognition of his intrepidity in jumping into the wafer, and rescuing from drowning one of the ship’s crew who fell over 'card whilst the vessel was at anchor in Lyttelton H rbour; and t > Mr J. N. Baxter, second officer of the same vessel, a handsome telescope, as a mark of their appreciation of similar intrepid conduct in saving from drowning another member of the crew. CLEARANCE OF THE HALCIONE. Shaw Saville and Co.’s handsome little ship Halcio 'e, cleared the Customs last night, and was to proceed to sea should the wind serve. Captain Croker’s vessel is in splendid trim, and besides a full cargo of wool and wheat, carries seven saloon passengers. We append an approximate estimate of the valne of the cargo £ 2762 bales wool and skins , 55,240 0 0 2732 sacks wheat 2732 0 0 34 casks tallow 476 0 0 01 packages sundries ... 305 0 0 £58,753 0 0 THE SCHOONER CANTERBURY AT SAMOA. A few weeks ago we had occasion to refer to the proceedings in connection with the sale of the above schooner, and we now give the result, culled from the“ Samoa Times”:—A. Naval Court was held atthe Brithh Consnlate. Apia, on Saturday, 35th November, to decide as to the legality or otherwise of the sale of the Canterbury at Pago Pago. The Court was called at the instance of Mr W. J. Hunt, the late owner, who pretested that the sale was illegal. Captain Robinson, the master of the vessel; Mr Mair, the supercargo, who bought the vessel; Cnpt. Wright, who surveyed the vessel; Mr Kelly, the mate ; and several others gave evidence. The testimony was of a most extraordinary character. Mr Mair swore that Hunt, before the Canterbury left Apia, took him and others into a back house in the town, and told them that he was going to send the vessel to Pago Pago to he condemned, and that he (Mair' was to buy her for a Mr Eckford, meaning himself, aduß-g that it was the only way to clear himself from the liabilities 1m had incurred in Au -klmd. ihe captain contradicted this evidence, and said he was, compelled to pnt into Pago Pago, as the ship was leaking badly. Captain Sadler, of Apia, was called, and swore that when the Canterbury left he understood that she was to be condemned and sold in Pago Pago. Ho was led to understand so by Hunt himself. The Court, wishing to know who the mortgagees were, received the following reply :—National Bank of New Zealand, £250 ; Air Hill, £125 ; R. Cashmere, £125. The Court found that the sale was legal, ordered Hunt to pay all expenses, and awarded Mair 5s compensation. The Court also recorded its strong disapprobation of tho conduct of Mr Hunt. Mr Hunt*protested against the decision, hut ids protest was not entertained. Mr Mair subsequently sold tbe schooner to a Chinaman who, however, refused to pay until tho papers had been signed by CCtUUI, who was away at the time. SHIPPING TELEGRAMS. Auckland, January 15.
