AUSTRALIAN ELEVEN v. OTAGO TWENTY-TWO. [BY TKLEGKRAPH. PEE TRESS AGENCY.] Dunedin, January 11. The following is the conclusion of the report of yesterday's play : After lunch the Dunedin men took the field, being in high spirits, and having a certain hope of claiming the first victory in New Zealand. Douglas and Niven went first to the wickets, and Douglas received an over from Spofforth without result, though carefully played. Qarratt's first ball sent Niven home, being caught on his wicket by Blackham. 10—0. Cargill filled the vacancy, and a leg-bye was immediately stolen. Cargill broke an egg with one past point oil: Ghrratt and followed with another to mid-on ofl'Spofforth. Cargill played carefully throughout. Douglas made his first off Spofforth to midon. Cargill followed with a pretty cut for 2 off Spofforth's last ball in the over. Douglas made a single, and several balls were given without result, when Cargill's timbers were scattered by Qarratt. 2 I—B. Paramor then handled the willow. Douglas, after making a show off a stand on block, received a trimmer from Q-arratt, and the score stood 9—3— 2. McNeill, the top scorer of Saturday, took Douglas's place amidst applause. Paramor got away a ball for 2 off Spofforth, and another to long field for 2, but with his next ball he was given out l.b.w. 13 —4 —l. Dixon filled Paramor's place. McNeill took his first from Spofforth for a duck's egg. 15—5—0. Macfarlane stood to the bowling of Spofforth, and nearly gave slip a chance. His third ball he drove for 1, and followed with another off Q-arratt. After a maiden for Spofforth, McNeill drove one to the chains and scored 3. amidst great applause. Macfarlane stole 1 off Spofforth, and in attempting a third for a splendid hit McNeill was run out, much to the chagrin of the Dunedinites. 21—6 —I. The last ball of Q-arratt's next sent Macfarlane home 1 b w, seven wickets gone for 21 runs. Captain Spring then went to alter, if possible, thegloomy look of things. Nicholls'centre stump fell to Q-arratt. Eight for 28. Spring retired after adding only 2 to his score, Garratt scattering his timbers. Nine for 29. Fulton filled the vacancy, but several balls came from each end without result, when Fulton was caught by Elackham on his wickets. Clark opened with a drive for 2, and Rose poked the following ball for 1, and skied the next for another single. Clark followed with a "daisy cutter" for 1 off Spofforth. Rose shortly after made a nice drive for 1, but a couple of balls afterwards Qarratt sent him home. A shower of rain Btopped the proceedings. After forty minutes' delay play was resumed, Rhodes taking Rose's place, and Clark and Rhodes quickly"added to the score, for a time hitting the balls as they liked. Clarke was the first to make two figures, and Rhodes followed suit, and the score soon ran up to 60. After making 14, Rhodes was put an end to by Boyle, who caught him at slip off Qarratt. 12—14—62. Morrison followed, and the first ball from Boyle settled Clark. 13—15—62. Austin succeeded, and_Boyle's first ball to Morrison took the stumps. 14—0—63. Haskell was next, and he played well for a good many overs, but Austin was not allowed to do much, being given out 1 b w after scoring!. 15—1—63. Sutcliffe was bowled by Qarratt for a ducks-egg. Millington followed, and got 4 together when he retired to one from Qarratt. 17 —1—77. Fawcett succeeded, and a few more balls saw Haskell retire for a well played 10, the telegraph showing 18—10—81. Qlen was next man, and after three overs, in which he scored as many runs, his mid-wicket fell. 10—3—84. Moore was next man, and then Fawcett broke an egg off Spofforth, and snicked Qarratt for 3. Moore drove Spofforth for 1, and 90 was put up. Fawcett got two singles, and then Spofforth knocked over Moore's stumps. 20—1 —93. The last man was Everest, but after 1 he tripped halfway his wicket, and his stumps were scattered. Total, 94. The following are the scores :
