The following is a report of the play which took place after lunch on Saturday: — During the afternoon about two thousand persons were on the ground. At lunch time heavy thunder and hail storms suddenly set in, and the rest of the afternoon was showery, windy, and cold. On play being resumed after lunch, Boyle took up the bowling at Garrett’s end, bowling with the wind. His fisrt over was a maiden. Another maiden by Garrett, and then one to leg from Horan, was followed by Haskell being clean bowled by Boyle. 13 —6 —Bl. Spofforth then took up the bowling at Garrett s end, and Garrett at Boyle’s end. After a short interval the two Bannermans took the wickets for the Australians, Moore and Millington bowling. Moore’s first over was a maiden to A. Bannerman. Play commenced by several singles, when C. Biimicrman opened bis shoulders to one oi Millington’s, but Dixon was ready, and the great batsman retired for 2. Score—l--- 1 Horan was next, Otago fielding well, Spring at the wickets acting splendidly. Runs came slowly, singles onlv being got. Glen took the bowling from Millington. His first over was a maiden, Austin relieving Moore at the other end and givin a maiden to Horan. Runs mere still coming slowly, when A. Bannerman was given out lb w. 3—13—37. Spofforth followed, but the bowling was too good to take liberties with. Spofforth drove Austin for 1, and brought the score up to 40. After another single by Spofforth, Horan was beautifully caught by Fawcett. 3-24-41. Murdoch was next, and after a single he gave a chance to Cargill, which was not accepted. The scoring was slow, the fielding bring too good. The batsmen were merely defending the wickets, Austing bowling five maidens in succession. Spofforth skied one off Glen, but it was refused by Moore. A drive by the *sme plaver off Austin brought the score to ithe half century. Bailey was next, and after scoring 6 tipped one into Spring’s hands behind the wicket-9—6—92. Kendall, the last man, took the vacancy, and in Glen’s first over his mid wicket was knocked out of the ground. Total score, 92. The second innings commenced a little before two o’clock. The Australians seem determined to make short work of it. Up to three o’clock the wickets fell thus : -1 for 0,2 for 8, 3 for 9, 4 for 13, 5 for 13, 6 for 21, 7 for 21.
