THE NATIVE WAR IN SAMOA.
The following news of the native disturbance in Samoa is telegraphed from Sydney to the "Melbourne Argus," of the 27th ult. :
Samoa news to the Ist instant states that war has been declared between the Government party and the chief Mango, of Pago Pago. The views of Manga differ from those held by both the other parties at Upolu. He wishes to have a distinct government of his own, and not to he united or connected with the General Government in any way. Fighting with varying success has taken place. The Government party have entrenched themselves at Fagaalu, awaiting the arrival of reinforcements. Two distinct battles were fought on the 16th and 17th November, the first commencing at Nuuli, and continuing on to Fugaalu. During the fight the Government had one killed and twenty-nine wounded, whereas the Puletua side had two killed and ten wounded The second battle took place on the east side of Pago Pago Heads, at which the Government lost twelve killed and twenty-two wounded, the heads of seven of the killed being brought in to Manga the chief, the other five being left on the boundary. The Puletua party had five wounded, of whom one has since died. The German war steamer Augusta attempted to make peace, but failed. Manga subsequently vacated the fort at Pago, and has arrived at the island of Annuu.
The Tongans have experienced a similar drought to that at Samoa, and rain is much wanted.
