OHRISTCHURCH, Monday, Januaey 7. TBefore G. L. Lee, Esq., and Dr. Deamer, J.P.'s] Lunacy fbom Dbink.—Horatio Gilchrist and James Parker were remanded to Ly ttelton Gaol till the 14th for medical treatment. Dbunk and Disobdbk&y— Jas. Mitchell, for being drunk at the Christchurch Railway Station on Saturday, was fined ss. Mary Welstead and Ellen Jordan, for being drunk and disorderly in a house in Lyttelton street, were sent to" prison for three months, with hard labor. Bbeaking into a Dwelling. John Heaven and G. Stevens were charged with this offence. The charge against Heaven was withdrawn, there being no evidence against him. After Detective Benjamin had deposed to arresting the prisoners., he asked for a remand till the 14th instant for the completion of evidence against Stevens. Granted. Laeckny.—Eliza Jane Barrett was charged with the larceny of £2 from a man named James Andrews.—Detective Benjamin deposed to going to a house in Phillipstown in company with Andrews, and sseeing accused there. Made a search, and found the money Oil the top of a fowl-house. Accused then I admitted that she took the money in a lark, | and finding that Andrews got into such a rage was afraid to admit that she had done BO. —After Andrews and another witness had I been examined, accused, in reply to the Bench, admitted taking the money in a lark. —The Bench sent accused to prison for one Violent Assault.—W. Forbes, clmrged with violently assaulting John Barlow, at Papanui, was, on the application of the police, remanded till the 10th in at. Keeping a Bkothel.—Hu»h O'Neill and Alice O'Neill were charged with keeping a brothel in Brown street and using obscene language. —Detective Hughes deposed to the house kept by the accused being frequented by prostitutes and disreputable characters.— Fined £5 in each case, or two months, one month in each case. Miscellaneous.—For throwing a glass bottle on a public thoroughfare, J. Deppinhiem was fined 10s.-J. Foste?, jun., was fined 10s for not having a light on a heap of shingle. Bbeach op Licensing Act.—W. Maples, for keeping his hotel open on Christmas morning, was fined £s.—Mary Burns was charged, on three informations, with selling or supplying liquor in a less quantity than two gallons, in her house at Wheatsheaf. Mr Thomas appeared for the accused.—Luke Marlin and Elizabeth Marlin gave evidence to the effect that Hrink was served to them on December 2nd by Mri> Burns. -Brown deposed to being in the house during the whole of the time the Marlins were in the house on that occasion; he saw no chunk served.—John Carter deposed to hearing Marlin ask for drink and Mrs Burns refused. —Lizzy Henry also gave corroborative evidence. —Mrs Burns swore that no drink was supplied to the Marlins at the time named A second charge, of supplying W. Reid with drink on the same date was then heard. Case dismissed. —Joseph Morling was charged with keeping his licensed house, the Victoria Hotel, open on Christmas morning, and with allowing games therein. Evidence was given to show that the house was open on that morning, about one o'clock, and that there were men there playing cards and bagatelle. After hearing the evidence, Mr Thomas contended that this was a trivial case. The door of the billiard room might have beei. opened, but there was no drink sold, nor was any gambling allowed. He would ask the Bench to look upon the case as a trivial one. The Bench dismissed the charge against accused of keeping his house open, but was of opinion that games had been permitted.' Mr Thomas upplied to hsive thit charge adjourned in order to produce evi dence that no gambling was going on. ing drink. J. Fitzroy deposed to transferring the Marine Hotel at. Sumner to Mr Klingenstein on the 20th. Mr Klingenstein deposed to having taken the hotel on tlie 20th, and appointing Hamilton his agent. Took immediate step* to have the transfer completed, but it was shown that it had mot been done on the 23rd. Case dismissed. —J. Pitzroy was then charged with selling liquor on the 23rd. Defendant admitted that the liquor was sold, but said he was not (.hen in possession. The Bench said defendant was nevertheless liable, and fined Fitzroy in the sum of 10s. A fresh case against M«ry Burns was then called, but on the application of the police it was withdrawn.
