THE WAR.

The Attitude of England

Advance of the Russians. Turkish Proposals for an Armistice. London, January 3. Lord Carnarvon, speaking to a deputation of (Jape colonists, said England was unprepared to bolster the Turkish interest purely as such. England had not offered mediation as supposed by actual overtures of peace. The Turks hold Sophia. The Russians have advanced between the Ichtiman defile and Sophia, cutting off the retreat to Adrianople. The Turks propose an armistice on the basis that each party retains whatever territory gained. It is reported that the Fenian prisoners will shortly be released.
