A leader in the "Observer" says that the refusal of Russia to conclude a peace must leave England to intervene in the war. A discussion is proceeding in the Continental Press with reference to England obtaining! the suzerainty of Egypt. German papers are favorable. Public opinion in Austria endorses England's policy. The Hungarian Minister Tizza is visiting Berlin. The Czar has ordered the enrolment of ■IBO,OOO men for 1878.
The armament of the Russian fleet is being vigorously pushed forward. An urgent message has been sent by Ministers to their supporters for the opening of Parliament.
[EEUTEE'S SPECIAL TELEGBAMS TO PEESS AGENCY.] LONDON, January 1. Mukhtar has been recalled to Stamboul. An attack by torpedo vessels on the Turkish fleet at Batoum failed. The Russian bridge over the Danube is broken. Communicatioubetween Bulgaria and Roumania is suspended in consequence The Turkish commander defending Nissa made proposals for surrender. The Channel fleet and the ships under repair and put in commission are all ordered to be ready for sea by the 16th instant. Count Andrassy, according to the Government organ at Pesth, has stated that Austria has been forced temporarily to join the Triple Alliance, but she will support England the moment she decides upon a resolute policy. COMMERCIAL. London, December 28. Consols are unchanged. The market rate of discount is a half below the Bank rate. Wool is unchanged. Wheat: Adelaide, 65s to 66s ; New Zealand, 41s to 435. Australian tallow steady. New Zealand hemp steady. Queensland, South Australian, and New South Wales are quoted at one half lower. AUSTRALIAN. Melbouene, Tuesday. The total amount realised at the Maribyrnong sale of thoroughbred stock was £51,325 for a hundred lots. Mr Delves Broughton has been appointed Deputy-Master of the Melbourne mint. Sydney, Tuesday. Colonel Gorton resigns his appointment of Inspector of Stores. Auckland, January 1. Mr Sheehan, Native Minister, met with an accident this afternoon as he was leaving the Hospital. By a fall he broke one of his ribs, but he is able to move about, and will go South to-morrow.
