AUCKLAND v. CANTERBURY. [By Telegraph.] [PROM THE SPECIAL REPORTER OF THE X'RKSS.] Auckland, December 29, Rain fell about three o’clock, but cleared up, and, except some small showers at the end of Auckland’s innings, the weather was splendid, though hot. Spectators attended numerously, including a large number of ladies, about 1100 at one time being on the ground. The two not-outs, Robinson and Q-leeson, faced Ashby and W. Frith, the former taking the first over, off which Q-leeson made 2 to leg, and Robinson a single off Frith’s last. Steady play now became the order of the day, both batsmen settling down to their work. 30 went up, and then 40. Before any more could be made, Ashby caught Robinson in the slips. 40 —I—2o.1 —20. Mumford did not stay long, Frith taking his leg stump. 40—2—20. Rees then joined Qlecson, who commenced with a single to the off. They scored 3 each, and Rees gave a chance, but he was let off. Neilson went on with his slows. Qleeson, who had been shaping well to the fast bowling, stepped out to one, but was let off by Fowler. Qleeson tried Neilson again, and was stumped, retiring after making 26 in good style, only one 3 and three 2’s being amongst his figures. 71—3 —26. Things began to look rather blue for Canterbury, and Yates made things worse, for, after hitting Neilson nicely to long-log, he gave a chance to the substitute for C. Frith, at cover point, and was let off. The scoring now became very slow, Canterbury fielding well and and the bowling good. At last Neilson clean bowled Rees with a curly one. 80—4—20. Lynch came next, and seemed out of form ; W. Frith puzzling him. At 00 Neilson handed the ball to Ashby. Scoring was still' very slow, ten overs being bowled for five runs. Shortly after this Ashby was no balled, which evidently riled him, for he then put one in at his best pace, and Lynch’s leg stump fell flat. 90 —s—B.5 —8. Dufaur played on the defensive for a long time, as did Yates. The latter at last got a 3 off W. Frith, which brought out 100 on the board, amidst loud cheers. Yery slow play ensued. An adjournment was here : made jjfor luncheon. Upon Lynch resuming, a change came over the state of affairs, both Ashby and Frith being dead on to the wicket. Yates was at length caught at point off Ashby, and on his retirement the figures showed 112 —6—22. Qrierson then appeared. For some time the play was very slow, a single with an occasional double being all that could be got. Still the score slowly crept up, 120 appearing, when Wood made a serviceable catch at square-leg, which he judged well. This catch caused great excitement. 132—7 —l4. Colson was run out without batting a ball, Wood picking it up and returning it to Fowler very neatly. 132—8—0. Cotton was soon caught at the wickets, and Qrierson after playing some good cricket succumbed to a shooter from Ashby, the innings closing for 135. The wicket having been carefully rolled, Neilson and Qodby started against Buckland and Lynch. From the jump it was made rather warm, Qodby hitting to square leg for 3, and Neilson sending Buckland’s first ball to the off for 2. Qodby scored a single, and then Neilson made a splendid on drive for four off Lynch, and the board showed 10 up. After a couple of singles and two 2’s, a change was considered desirable, Lynch being relieved by Robinson. Qodby made 2 off his second bail, and cut his last for a single. 20 up. The same batsman made 3 off Buckland. Shortly after this he played at a leg ball from Robinson, and landed it into Mumford’s hands at short leg. 20—1 —14. Wilson did not stay long, but still Neilson had time in his company to make a good on drive for 3. Wilson scored two singles, when Buckland clean bowled him. 25 —2—2. Ashby joined Neilson, and for a lime the play became lively, causing the slows to be put on. Neilson sent the first away for 3 by a back hit. Ashby made a single, and Noilson in hitting to leg ball was caught at squareleg by Qleeson. He played a good innings—--60—3—29. Wood took his place and played the slows very well, making several singles and an occasional 2. Ashby caused the slow bowling to be taken off by driving them over the heads of the fieldsmen. Several changes were made hut still the runs came in rather slowly. Four maidens were bowled in succession by Buckland and Lynch ; 70 and 80 had appeared, on the board, and when 90 came on Ashby had to retire playing one on to his wickets from Buckland —91 —4—32. Ashby’s innings was very good. He played in his best style without a chance. Fowler joined Wood. The bowler tried what he could do with long hops, but finding that 3 runs generally resulted, he knocked them off. Wood all this time was playing the game in great form, and while these two were in 100, then 110, appeared. When the board showed 115, Wood put one up in the direction of Yates, and retired for an extreme ly serviceable 16. 115 —5 —16. Morrison enlivened the proceedings by batting freely. He played in better style than he had ever displayed down South. 14 in six hits was not bad, and these, with a few from Fowler, brought up the score to 13-1, when the stumps ' were drawn for the day. Appearances ere not
favourable for Auckland, and Canterbury has by no means a bad chance of winning. A banquet is to be given to the twm teams to-night at the Star, and over 100 are expected to sit down.
