AUCKLAND v. CANTERBURY. [By Telegraph.] [prom this special reporter op the press.] Auckland, December 28, The early morning broke clear, bnt windy. About nine o’clock clouds appeared and smart showers fell. From then till 11.30 there was a constant drizzle. Afterwards heavy rain fell, continuing for some time. During the Tain the coin was spun. Neilson, winning, decided to go in. Wilson and Qodby were the first men. The Auckland field were thus placed : —Coleson, wicket-keeper ; Robinson, bowler; Rice, point; Lynch, short-slip ; Buckland, third man ; Griierson, cover and long-leg ; Mumford, short-leg ; Dufaur, midon ; Colton, long-stop ; Yates, deep mid-on and long slip; Qleeson, mid-off. At a quarter-past eleven Robinson delivered the first ball to Q-odby. The second ball, on appeal for leg-before, was not responded to. The last ball was driven hard hack, but was not held. Lynch took the other end. Wilson made 2 to leg off the second ball. Qodby got 1 to leg from Robinson. Lynch bowled a maiden; only one ball on the wicket. Wilson made 2 for an off drive from Robinson, and next Qodby got 3 ditto from Lynch. The wicket keeper now went to short stop, Qodby hit all along the ground off Robinson, but was stopped by Yates and only 1 made ; then anochcr, rather badly fielded, off Lynch. Qodby put Robinson prettily away to leg, then cut Lynch for 2. Qodby made an off hit for 4 next over ; Lynch bowled a maiden, and Wilson got 2 and 1 to leg off Robinson—2o up. After singles from each bowler by Wilson, the next two overs from Lynch were maidens. Buckland relieved Robinson, and led off with a wide; then Wilson made 2 by a leg hit and overthrow. A maiden from Lynch, during which Wilson gave a chance to short-slip, which was missed. Buckland changed sides and bowled a maiden. Wilson then got Lynch twice away for a couple —30 up. Two to Qodby for a forward cover-hit off Buckland. A consultation in the middle of the ground resulted in Buckland changing ends. Wilson had him hard to the off, but the ball was>ell stopped by Qrierson. Rees went on with slows at the other end. Qodby made 2 with a hit to leg off the first ball, and hit the next hard to the off, which was well fielded by Mumford. Wilson got half way down the ground, the ball was well returned, but mulled by the bowler, and the batsman got back. He was then bowled by Buckland’s third ball. 35—1—10. Ashby, the next man, then joined Qodby, who made two off Rees. At this stage of the game very few people wore present, and at no time during the day were there more than 1000. Ashby made 3 to leg off Buckland (40 up), and a’ single in the slips off Lynch, and another all along the carpet off Rees. Qodby then got him away for a couple to leg. Buckland bowled a maiden. Ashby made 3 and Qodby 1 off Rees—so up. Qodby got 2 and a single off Buckland. Lynch here took the ball from Rees. Ashby hit him splendidly to leg, but only one was made, owing to the good fielding of Qleeson. Then Qodby retired clean bowled. 53—2—23. Neilson took Qodby’s place, and opened with a single, then a bye was run. An adjournment now took place owing to a heavy shower. When the men again took the ‘field, Ashby played a good over from Buckland. Rain then came down heavily, and it was decided to adjourn until after lunch. For nearly an hour it rained very heavily, and also thundered and lightened; the pitch looked like a lake. Shortly after three the wain ceased, and the water dis appeared. A warm sun coming out a fresh itart was made at four. Lynch and Buck-

land each bowled a wide. Neilson then got a couple from Lynch, but playing forward to Hie next ball returned it to the bowler. 57 3—3. Wood now appeared. Buckland bowled a maiden. Wood made 2by forward piny off Lynch, and the same off Buckland. Ashby was then bowled with a shooter. 58—4 —12. Eowler then joined Wood, the latter making three singles and a 2 in the next three overs, and Fowler 3 and 2 in the following two. Robinson relieved Buckland, and had Fowler, who misjudged one and was stumped. 70 —5 —6. C. Frith got Robinson away for 3 to squareleg, then slipped him for 2, and got Lynch away for 2, and Robinson for a single. Lynch then changed to over the wicket, and with his first ball got Frith off his pads. 83—7—8. Million played the remainder of the over without scoring. Morrison made a single to the off from Robinson the first ball, and in the next over hit Lynch hard to square leg, Mumford failing to hold the ball. Millton got three to leg and Morrison a single off Robinson. Lynch changed to round wicket. Morrison put him away neatly to leg single last ball. Millton snicked one, and was caught by short-stop. 89 —B—3. Buckland relieved Robinson as W. Frith went in. Morrison got one, W. Frith two singles, and Morrison another. Frith then was easily caught at point, the ball going rather high, and the next ball bowled Morrison. Berry carried out his bat. 93 —10—6. The small score, after so good a beginning, is attributable to the rain. Ashby and Neilson played well, but could do nothing on the dead wicket. The others were also all abroad, save Wood and Morrison, who both played well for their small scores. The wickets having been roller 1 , x. )binson and Gleeson faced Ashby and Fritn, and during the half hour play was continued, totalled up 23 runs, principally by close running, only two 2’s, and a 3 being made. Q-leeson took the first ball, and led off with a single from Ashby, then another from C. Frith. Ashby bowled a maiden, and five singles were got off the next three overs. Then a maiden to each bowler, A couple of byes and a single to Robinson off Ashby brought up 10. Four singles off the next two overs ; then G-leeson ought to have been run out, the ball being well returned by Millton, and neatly taken by Fowler, but he missed the wicket. Robinson made three to leg off Ashby. Frith in trying for a catch next ball got it on the end of his little linger, and broke it. He tried to bowl next over, but although only two singles were made, he was all astray, After Ashby had bowled a maiden W. Frith took his brother’s place. Robinson scored a single off his first over, and Gleeson 2 to leg in Ashby’s next; then Robinson made 2 to leg off W. Frith, and Gleeson got a single. The stumps were then drawn for the day. The Christchurch men had bad luck all round. C. Frith will not be able to bowl. Auckland went in when the sun had just made wicket a little playable. The following is the score : CANTERBURY.
