THF LYTTELTON REGATTA. The cutter Spray arrived from Dunedin in the b.B. Wakatipu yesterday. Mr Street's Winona was to leave Port Chalmers on the 26th, and no doubt by this time is well on her way. As the two Lyttelton yachts—the Jimmy Flynn, from Pigeon Bay, and the Venture, from Akaroa—will also compete, there will be a field of six for the Champion Yacht race on the Ist January. Mr Gibbs, who has twice already sailed a winning yacht at Lyttelton—namely, the Ripple and the Spray —comes up with the Spray, and no doubt in his able hands she will prove a formidable competitor at the ensuing regatta. The Taupo brought another arrival in the shape of some members of the Wellington Rowing Club, with their new boat, the Arawata. The boat is a beautiful model, built much in the same style as the Ringarooma, and will of course compete in the Champion Whaleboat race. Her crew is reported as an exceedingly strong one, including some of the men who won the Interprovincial race at Nelson last year, and have distinguished themselves on many other occasions. They tried a preliminary pull last night, and showed good style. The schooner Torea is preparing to compete in the Champion Sailing race, and the Transit and several other vessels are daily expected, amongst which is the ketch Anna, from Dunedin. Only two small yachts are at present in port to compete for the Commodore's prize, but it is hoped Kaiapoi will sent another to make up the race.
There is little doubt of there being a fair number of entries for most of the events, and the regatta as a whole promises to be even a greater success than last year. We call attention to an advertisement stating that entries for the regatta close at 8 p.m. on Saturday, at the Colonists’ Hall, Lyttelton.
