Thirty Thousand Prisoners with Fourteen Thousand Sick and Wounded Captured. Servia Declared War. London, November 30. The Russian Press advocate the retention of Kars. It is officially announced that the Russians will accept an armistice after Plevna has fallen. December 2. The commander of the Turkish forces at Erzeroum states his ability to defend the town. Raouf Pasha is organising a camp of 50,000 troops at Adrianople. London, December 11. Plevna has surrendered after severe fighting. The garrison was reduced to starvation. Osman Pasha was severely wounded at the last attempt to break through the Russian lines. By the fall of Plevna Bulgaria and the country north of the Balkans are open to the Russians. December 15. Thirty thousand prisoners, with fourteen thousand sick and wounded, were captured at Plevna, besides a large number of guns and other material. Osman Pasha was allowed a guard of honor before his tent and the use of the Emperor's carriage. The Servians have commenced hostilities against Turkey. Affairs in France. London, December 2. Gambetta has demanded the President of the French Republic to renounce the right to dissolve the Legislature. Marshal McMahon has rejected the demand. AUSTRALIAN. Sydney, December 18. The Stad Amsterdam has arrived at Adelaide, forty-seven days from London. Passengers for New Zealand—Messrs Buxton, Hamilton, Castenake, Erichoff, Fox, wife and infant, Wing. The new Ministry are—Mr Parnell, Premier and Secretary of Lands; Mr Fitzpatrick, Colonial Secretary; Mr Cohen, Treasurer; Mr Leary, Minister of Justice ; Mr Sutherland, Minister of Works ; Mr Sutton, Minister of Mines; Mr Foster, Attorney-General; Mr Burns, Postmaster-General. The Assembly has adjourned till January 22nd. The Government have already decided, at the request of a deputation, to postpone the advertised auction sales of land until the House has decided the question. INTERPROVINCIAL. [PEB PEESS AGENCY.] Napieb, December 19. The trial of Hans Thomsen, charged with murder, occupied the Supreme Court on Monday and yesterday till past midnight each day. At a quarter-past twelve last night the jury brought in a verdict of "Not Guilty." They were only twenty minutes considering. The Court was densely pat ked, and there were demonstrations of applause, but they were quickly suppressed. The Chief Justice said he could not understand such a demonstration in a Court of justice. Dunedin, December 19. The railway line between Dunedin and Blueskin will be formally opened to-morrow. Already lands favorably situated are fetching high prices j £2500 cash has just been paid cor sixty acres in the locality. The Rifle Association fire for the Mayor's cup to-morrow. The Lady Mayoress has been requested to fire the first shot.
