The Loch Fleet is nearly all out, and ready for stiffening. The Halcione discharged a good bit of her cargo ; she would have done more if there had been sufficient trucks. THE STEAMER GRAFTON. This steamer arrived from Dunedin yesterday at 2.30 p.m. She is the property of Captain Williams, of Wellington, and is intended for trading to the West Coast. Captain Anderson, late of the Taranaki, so well-known and esteemed on the coast, is her master, the chief engineer being Mr Craig, and the chief officer Mr Manly, late of tbo Anno Mclhoish; Mr White, well-known in the northern trade, being the purser. The Grafton is a nice handy-looking craft, with plenty of space for cargo, and a fair saloon. She was built some years ago by Messrs Baird, of Birkenhead, and was originally a paddle-steamer, but has been altered, and is now a twin-screw. The steamer has been thoroughly remodelled lately, to tit her for her present trade. She is 274 tons register, and can carry 450 tons cargo, on a draught of 9 feet, so that she is admirably suited for our bar harbours on the coast. The deck is flush fore and aft, with a large house aft, which forms an admirable upper saloon, used for a dining-room. Out of this, a staircase leads to the lower saloon, wliich, like the upper, is lofty, airy, and comfortably furnished. Attached to this is a ladies’ saloon. The boat is licensed to carry 150 passengers in all, 40 of which can be accommodated in the saloon. The captain's quarters are forward of the saloon, and the officers are lodged amidships, under the bridge. The engines are by Mort, of Sydney, and are high-pressure condensers of sixty-five horse-power nominal, capable of being worked up to more than 400 horse-power. They are fitted with the most approved expansive gear, and work from two inches of stroke. The circulating and other pumps are worked by a third engine, and the total consumption of coal is not more than five tons per twenty-tour hours; the speed attained being from eight to nine knots per hour. The propellers are 7ft., with a pitch of Bft. 6iu., and run at 120 revolutions per minute. Her sides have rather a strange appearance from the removal of the paddle-boxes, but her bridge is a roomy one. The Grafton carries only fore and aft canvas, and, taken altogether, is a most pleasing looking boat, and Captain Anderson assures us she is a capital vessel at sea. She has been trading between Sydney and the Clarence before coming here. She left Sydney on November 28th, reached Wellington December sth, sailed for Dunedin, left that port on the 13th at 2.40 p.m., and arrived here at 2.30 p.m. yesterday, having flue weather up the coast. She sails for Wellington at at 3 p.m. tu-day.
