Auckland, December 12. An Auckland Timber Company is being iloated to acquire the forests and mills of Holdship and Co., taking possession in the beginning of next year. The Belle Brandon, schooner, from the Islands, reports an attack by natives on Captain Ohlsen and party at Kaoma. Captain Robinson, late owner of the Jessie Henderson, narrowly escaped death by tomahawking. A native rushed the party, and tomahawked Robinson in the back. Friendly natives interfering prevented a general massacre. The cause of the attack is unknown. It is believed to be jealousy at Captain Robinson's intention to take away the European trade. At the Supreme Court to-day, James McGregor was sentenced to seven years and ten years, the sentence to be cumulative. James McMillan, convicted last night of larceny as a bailee, was sentenced to nine months. Robert Edwards (half-caste), charged with larceny of a cheque, was acquitted. Pene Matua, also charged with larceny of a cheque, wa3 acquitted. Wellington, December 12. The Presbyterian Assembly had a long discussion last night re sustentation fund. It was unanimously agreed to adopt the scheme i and to bring it into operation on the Ist of | January, 1877. The agent to visit all congrej gations during next year and assist ministers to instruct their congregations in the principles and working of the scheme, and to prepare them for joining. To-day the Assembly made arrangements to secure sites for churches in all new townj ships. j The report of the Cluirch Extension Comi mittee showed much progress in extending i churches. Fields of operation at many new j points had been taken up and occupied by ! young men preparing for the ministry, and it I was agreed to plant men in some bush settleI ments to look after the spiritual needs of the i settlers. The agent gave a report of very successful visits to various parts. His office . promises beneficial results in extending and j strengthening the Church's operations. A model trust deed was submitted and ordered to be printed for the consideration of . Presbyteries. ! After some other business of minor im--1 portance the Moderator delivered his closing address, and adjourned the Assembly, to meet in Christchurch in March, 1879. [from the correspondents OF TnE PRESS.] Supreme Court, Timaru. Timahu, December 12. The half-yearly criminal sittings of the Supreme Court were opened to-day. The calendar included sixteen prisoners. Judge Johnston, iu addressing the Grand Jury, said he was glad to see such marked decrease in that section of offences which included issuing valueless cheques. He hoped it was a proof that shopkeepers and other business people were exercising more caution in the matter. He remarked that the calendar, although certainly a long one, did not include any offences of extra magnitude. True bills were found against A. Prentice, for housebreaking ; T. Ingwood, for larceny ; W. Ray, for stealing from the person ; T. Lambert, for larceny; W. Orr, for burglary ; W. J. 11. D. Harper, for obtaining money under false pretences ; and Margaret Wilson, for sending a threatening letter in re affiliation. Harper was sentenced to twelve mouths, and Ingwood to six months. Tho libel case brought by Judge Ward against the proprietor of the " South Canterbury Times " will probably bo adjourned till nest sessions.
