BOARD OF EDUCATION.
Thursday, December <>. A meeting of the Board was held at 3 p.m. Present —Messrs J. Inglis (chairman), "Webb, Tancred. BUSINESS DONE BY CHAIRMAN. The business transacted by the Chairman since last meeting was approved. APPOINTMENTS. The Chairman reported certain appointments at various schools. The appointments were coniirmed. THE NEW EDUCATION ACT. The Chairman said a telegram had been despatched to the Government, pointing out that under the new Act there was a hiatus in the continuance of the Board until tlie appointment of a new one. A telegram was read from the under secretary stating that under the new Act the Board continued in office until the appointment of a new one. LYTTELTON INFANT SCHOOL. A letter was read from the committee, asking that certain works should be done at the school. It was resolved that the same be carried out if a favorable reply as to the amount at disposal of the Board for buildings and works was received from the G-overnment. WOODEND. The election of committee at Woodend was fixed for Monday week. hurunui. An election for two members of committee in place of those resigned was sanctioned. LITTLE RIVER. A similar resolution with regard to the Little River district was agreed to. HOLIDAYS. It was resolved that the same holidays be observed in the office of the Board as formerly. NEW KDUCATION ACT. The Chairman pointed out that it was necessary under the present circumstances that the Board should be furnished with copies of the new Act as soon as possible. THE JANUARY EXAMINATION. It was resolved to communicate with the G-overnment and ask whether the January examination was to go on, also to ask that copies of the Act should be forwarded. The Secretary reported the numbers for examination in January to be as follow : For first-class certificates, 3 ; for second, 26 ; for third, 43. For pupil teachers' examination, end of first year, under old regulations, 9 ; under new, 8 ; end of second year, 12 and 19 ; end of third year, 11 and 25; end of fourth year, 2 and 2 ; total, 1(30. REPORTS. Sundry reports from Mr Restell on schools examined were laid on the table. RANGITATA ISLAND. A letter was received from the committee, asking the Board, or any of its members to attend a tea meeting and entertainment on December 25th, on the occasion of the openiug of the new school. The invitation was declined with thanks. LYTTELTON. A letter was read from tho committee recommending an increase in the salary of Miss McG-owan, fifth teacher, and also in that of the janitor. It was resolved that the increase of Miss McG-owan's salary from £SO to £7O should be sanctioned, as als" that of the janitor from £(j<> to £7O per annum. The Board then went into committee, and afterwards adjourned.
