ROAD BOARDS.
RICCARTON. The ordinary meeting of this Board was held on Monday, at the office, Upper Riccarton. Present—All the members; Mr H. J. Hall, chairman. Mr Haskett waited on the Board and asked for an extension of time in which to complete his contracts for gravelling Bush Inn and Fendalltown roads. The Board granted an extension cl' thirty days. The clerk was directed to write to Messrs Smith and Douoghy and request them to finish their contract for metalling the Middleton road forthwith, as the Board will not give an extension of time, and intend to enforce the penalty. Complaints having been made to the Board of the dangerous position cf the railway gates on Pigeon's road, near Addington, it was revived to request the Government to widen the gates sufficiently tor the accommodation and safety of the public. The Chairman read a letter from M r Eolleston in reference to the diversion of certain roads ot the district, and stating tin# ho would endeavor to have the matter settled before he left Wellington. The'following resolution was proposed by Mr Numveck, and seouded by Mr Patterson, and carried unanimously—“ That the thanks of this Board bo given to Mr Rollcstou, M.H.R. for Avon, for his trouble and unremitting attention to the interests aud welfare of this road district, and that the same be recorded in the minutes.” A letter was received from the Treasury, Wellington, advising payment ol share of funds at credit of County of liclwyn. also advising payment of 10s in the Jc, as per return of rates for the year ended blst March. 1377. A letter was received from the Spreydou Road gourd, with cheque enclosed for half cost
of boundary roads, also suggesting that the railway line would be a more convenient boundary between tho two districts. Tho surveyor was directed to furnish a return by rext meeting, showing the cost of maintenance of roads south of the railway line, and also the value of rateable property in the same locality. A letter was read from the Templeton Road Board, suggesting that the contractor for the Riccarton footpath be asked to continue the footpath to Cnrlstt’s road, the Templeton Road Board paying the cost thereof. The Board requested the surveyor to arrange the matter with the Templeton road surveyor. A letter was read from Messrs Durey,Watson, and Stanley, requesting the Board to form the upper portion of the Wairnvapa road. The surveyor was directed to reply that the Board w T ould consider the matter when the gorsc ii cleared otf. A petition was read from Messrs Sutcliff, Varcoe, Aniyes, and ton others, requesting the Board to form full width the Sawyers’ Arms road, from the Styx bridge to the river bed. It was resolved to defer the consideration of this matter till after harvest. A letter was received from the Engineer to the Drainage Board, acknowledging receipt of resolution in reference to the drainage of Wright’s road. Complaints having been made to the Board of the damage caused by the trespass of cattle on the public roads, it was resolved — “That the Inspector of Police be respectfully requested to take steps to abate the nuisance caused by stock trespassing on the public roads of the district.’’ The surveyor was directed to communicate with Messrs Hanmer and Cudden with a view to obtaining a few feet of land to widen Cox’s road, and to arrange for having the road formed as soon as possible. A. number of tenders were received for works advertised, and several accepted. The surveyor’s report was read and considered, and the following works were ordered to be carried out, viz.:—The sandy portion of Donald’s road to be gravelled, and a footbridge to be erected over the Wairarapa on Webb’s road. The Board directed the surveyor to make arrangements for forming the unfinished portion of Highsted’s road. It was decided to hold the annualmeeting of ratepayers on Friday, the 4th of January, 1878. Tho Board adjourned until Monday, the !31 st of December.
