PUBLIC WORKS.

To the Editor of the Globe.

Sik, —Being a constant reader of all the daily papers in the province, and taking a deep interest in politics, both pa stand present, I must confess I, for one (and I have no doubt there are many others), am rather disappointed that there is no mention of the public works statement—not even the question asked by any private member of the House. After the financial statement, I thought it was the proper course for the public works statement to follow in its wake; but no, not a word has been said in reference to it. This lam the more surprised at, as I was under the impression that the present Government were greatly in favour of pushing on all the lines not‘yet completed, viz., the Great Trunk line ; and that it was part of their policy to look after public works in particular. It may be in the memory of some of your readers that the hon. members now on the Government benches were strong advocates for the extension of railways', even as private members, notably the Hon. J. Macandrew and-his fellow-colleague the Hon. Mr Larnach. Now that they are in office, and have the reins in their own hands, it might be reasonably expected of them that they woidd make a move in the matter, instead of wasting so much of their time in arguing points with Major Atkinson and party. _ There may perhaps be many reasons behind the curtain that we know nothing of. Perhaps want of funds, which most likely is the case, or many other reasons. I am the more sorry, as 1 expected better things when this Government took olliee. But in fairness it may be said the House is not yet prorogued, and they may yet perhaps give us a taste of their ability. ' Apologising for space allowed, "

I am, io., John Julius Fabler November 30th, 1877.
