CHRISTCHURCH. Monday, December 3. [Before G, L. Mellish, Esq., E.M., and J. Birch, Esq., J.P.] Drunkenness. —Mary Ann Kirkwood, an old offender, was given a last chance, and fined 20s, Three first offenders were each fined ss.

Attempted Suicide. —Richard Amer wps charged with haying attempted tp commit suipide at Leeston on 4th November, by cutting his throat with a razor. Accused had since been an inmate of the Christchurch Hospital, and was now recovered. On the application of Inspector Buckley he was remanded to Leeston, to be brought before the Bench there at its first meeting. Horses and Cattle at Large. —For permitting fiorgps and cattle to wander in public thoroughfares, the following -persons were eaph fined os : —Thos. Hazard, Richard Browne, Chas. Whittaker, G. L. Hellish, Robt. Falloon, W. A, Merriman, Thos. A}dridge, W. Hen wood, Benjamin Sheppard, R. Amos, W- M- Davie, A- Hammill, John Nisbett.

Miscellaneous. —Thomas Gee, summoned for neglecting to keep a sufficient light burning on a hoarding in Hereford street, was fined 10s. For tethering a horse in Market Place, J. R. Proctor was fined 10s. Santi Domestice, for not being in attendance on his vehicle in St. Asaph street, and William Selwyn summoned for not being in attendance on his cab at the rail way [station were fined 10s each.

very hard to earn sufficient to keep hig children at home, His Worship said he would let the matte” stand for a fortnight, but the defendant must endeavor during that time to pay at least £2. Remanded Case.— Charles James was charged, on remand, with an unnatural offence. Mr Joynt appeared for the defence, and, after cross-examination, commented on the evidence, contending that no jury would convict on it. His Worship said it was either a case of deliberate perjurv on the part of the witness Trigeaux, or one for a jury to consider. He considered it would be better to send the case for trial. Accused reserved his defence, and was fully committed to take his trial at the next criminal session of the Supreme Court. Bail was allowed in two sureties of £IOO each, and accused in £2OO.

Assaulting a Railway Official.— Q-eorge Leggatt was summoned for assaulting and obstructing a railway official on the South train. James Ashley, guard, stated that when the 3.50 train arrived at Racecourse station he spoke to defendant about a ticket, and without further notice he struck him on the nose. On arriving at the Lincoln station defendant tried to get away over a fence. Witness followed him, and defendant threw him down and tried to choke him. The up-train then came in, the guard of it came to witness’s assistance, and they then secured him until he gave his name. In reply to the Bench, defendant said the assault had arisen through the guard asking him for an excess of the proper fare. Both guards had torn his clothes and used language which he thought no railway officials should be allowed to use towards the public. His Worship said this was no excuse for his conduct. If he had a complaint he should have made it in a proper manner. Fined £5. Refusing to Sttpfobt his Wife.—Lauritz Neilson was charged on summons with having disobeyed an order of the court to pay £1 per week towards the support of his wife and family. Mrs Neilson stated that she had only received £2 from her husband since the 16th June. Defendant told his Worship that he refused to pay the money on principle. His Worship told him if he had any cause to show why the order should be reversed he could do so. Defendant declined to pay the arrears, £l3, and was ordered to pay the money forthwith; in default, one month’s imprisonment.

Destitute Relief Ordinance. —Fredk. Lane charged on summons with failing to support his wife and family offered to pay £2 per week, and the Bench made an order for that amount. His Worship also made an order protecting Mrs Lane’s earnings. Indecent Conduct. —J, Kingston summoned for committing an act of exposure in view of a private residence, at Sydneham, was fined 20s.

Cur By-Laws. —An adjourned information against R. M. Morten for allowing a nuisance to remain on his premises, Cathedral Square, was adjourned for a week, as the City Inspector informed the Bench that measures were being taken to abate the nuisance.
