Mayoral Election. The contest for Mayor of Christchurch took place yesterday, and resulted in the election of Mr Henry Thomson by thirteen votes. Considerable interest was manifested in the proceedings throughout the day, and at half-past seven, when the poll was declared, a large number of persons had collected in front of the Council Chambers. A full report appears elsewhere. Ashley Bridge.—Mr J. A. Cunningham, the chairman of the Ashley Road Board, who has been indefatigable in his endeavors to get a cart-bridge over the Ashley, has .just received a communication Lorn Mr J. E. Brown, M.H.R., to the effect that the Government has ordered a survey to be made or the southern side of the railway bridge, t( determine the advisability or otherwise oi joining a supplementary bridge to the present structure for purposes of ordinary traffic. Cricket. —The association match will be an eleven against the eleven that played at Timaru. The following will represent the former: —Messrs Ashby, Allen. Beamont, E. [fowler, Godby, Millington, Morrison, MacDonnell, Neilson, Ollivier, and Watson. Play will commence at 2 p.m., and as it will be only a one day’s match, players are requested to be punctual.

Rifle Shooting. —A contest has been arranged to take place at Hillsborough on Friday, the 7th December, between ten of the commissioned officers of the volunteer corps and a like number of civilians. The civilians’ team is as follows ; —Messrs Appleby, Allison, Anson, Dixon, Q-undersen, Hesketh, Innes, S. Manning, F. Pavitt, and Papperill. The conditions are—Seven shots at each range ; 200, 300, 400, and 500 yards ; any position ; any Government rifle and ammunition.

City Guards. —The firing for the wine given by Mr Preston came off yesterday morning. It was divided into three prizes. The conditions were as follows :—Five shots at 200 yards, 8-inch bull’s-eye. Position, any. The following are the scores :—Corporal Parker, 19; Colour-Sergeant Armstrong, 19; Private Francis, 17; Private Ekberg, 17; Sergeant Hill, 17; Sergeant Francis, 16; Private G. Parker, 16 ; Private Bowman, 15; Private Berry, 14; Private Buckett, 13; Corporal Swan, 12; Private Phillpot, 10 ; Private Bennett, 9. The first and second prizes were therefore won by Private Parker and Colour-Sergeant Armstrong, who made the excellent score of 19; the third prize by Private Francis. United Canterbury Cricket Club.— The return match with the second eleven of the M.C.C.C. will be begun on Saturday next. The following eleven will represent the U.C.C.C.: —Messrs H. Brittan, H. Cotterill, E. Cotterill, W. Cotterill, Cuff, Dawe, Mainwaring, W. Million, Parkerson, Peter and H. S. Smith. An alphabetical match will also be played, for which the following are the sides:—A-L: Messrs Bishop, Condell, C. H. Cooke, E. Cooke, Deacon, Dickinson, Frost, Fereday, Field, Harvey, Hartland, Hawkes, Izard, Johnston. M-Z: Messrs Mounier, Moorhead, Pixley, S. Powell, Potts, Paul, E. Ross, G. Ross, Tomlinson, Whitcombe, Willock, Wilkinson. Both matches will begin at two o’clock, Canterbury Rowing Club.— The final heats for the senior and junior handicap sculling races, for Messrs Harman and Sandstein’s challenge cups, were pulled off on the Avon last evening, over the same course as that for the races on Saturday, Messrs Lanauze and J. Grierson being the successful competitors in the respective heats. For the senior Lanauze had to give Seaton two lengths start. After the boats had been brought in position, and the word “off” was given, Lanauze was the first to grip the water, and before reaching the tannery he was almost on level terms with his opponent. On rounding Pratt’s corner Lanauze passed Seaton and gained a good lead, which he maintained to the finish and won easily. For the juniors J. Grierson had to row against Newton, the latter receiving three lengths start. Soon after starting Grierson passed his opponent and won easily by several lengths.

Lyttelton Regatta Committee.—A meeting of this committee was held on Tuesday evening last, Mr P. Cunningham in the chair. The committee appointed brought up report re alteration in rules and courses, which after consideration and some few alterations was agreed to.
