ANNIVERSARY SPORTS.
An adjourned meeting of the sports committee was held yesterday at the City Council Chamber, Mr Ollivier occupied the chair. Mr Wachsman was elected a member of committee. The committee appointed to report as to the cost of bringing the ground in Hagley Park into order brought up a report. They reported that it was impossible to get a 440 yards coursn this year for anything like an expense within their means. They could get a 300 yards course, but this would not be satisfactory. Hence they had decided upon coming back to the committee, and inform them that it was impossible for them to get a •MO yards course. If it was the wish of the committee, they would proceed with a 300 yards course, which could be done at a small cost, but not equal this year to the course on Latimer Square. The committee were nob prepared to recommend the 300 yards course. Mr Hebden also spoke on the subject, suggesting that for the present year the removal of the sports should be abandoned, but that the committee should at once proceed to form a ground in Hagley Park for ensuing years. Mr Bird while thinking that the time had arrived when the sports should be removed from Latimer Square, still would yield to the opinion of the committee for this year, and keep the sports in the square. He, however, heartily supported the proposition to make an early start this year to form a course for future years in Hagley Park. Mr Thomson, after the report of the committee, would move—“ That in consequence of the difficulty of immediately obtaining a 440 yards course in the Park, the ground committee, comprising Messrs Hebden, Walkden, and Mitchell, be requested to make arrangements for preparing Latimer Square for holding the Anniversary sports this year. Mr Bird seconded the motion, which was agreed to. The chairman said that Mr Wynn Williams had requested to be relieved of the treasurership. He had also received a telegram stating that the Government had acceded to the requeat of the petitioners, and agreed to proclaim. ' 17th December a public holiday. Mr Hebden; moved—“ That the committee, recognising the desirableness of the sports being held in the Domain next year, vote the sum of £35 towards the expense of forming the course in Hagley Park, on the condition that an equal sum be guaranteed by the committee hereafter appointed. That Lire committee io carry out the work be Messrs Hebden, Andrews, Walkden, and Wachsmann.” Mr Walkden seconded the motion. Alter a lengthened discussion, (he motion was negatived. An amendment by Mr Thomson—- “ That the consideration of the resolution be deferred until after the sports are held,” wa§ carried. Tire committee tiieia adjourned
