[PEB PRESS AGENCY.] INTEEPEOVINCIAL. Dunedin, November 27. There is great destruction of retail goods in the city owing to the want of water for the streets and continuous clouds of dust. It is proposed to lift sea water for the purpose of watering the streets. “Lohengrin” was magnificently produced last night by the Opera Company. Levy made his debut, and was enthusiastically applauded. He was recalled ten times during the evening. P AELI AMENT AEY. Last Night’s Proceedings. W Eddington, November 27. On the House resuming, Mr Stout read a telegram from Dr. Wallis positively denying having called the members in Wellington “ rogues and trimmers.” The further consideration of the South Eakaia Eoad Boards Bill was postponed till Wednesday. On the motion for going into Committee of Supply a further discussion took place on the financial policy. Mr Murray sketched out proposals both of finance, and dealing with the natives, and the land, which he thought more satisfactory than those of either the present or the late Government. Mr Eeynolds assented to the land fund being taken boldly, as it was hopeless to retain it, but hoped the present would be a final attempt of settling the question. Mr Eeid ridiculed the speeches of both Mr Murray and Mr Eeynolds, and said he did not believe the present system would be final. He denounced the taking of the land fund as wholesale robbery. Dr. Hodgkinson said the Southern members would not have adopted the present policy from choice, but it was better than that of the late Ministry. Mr Macandrew said the spoliation of Otago was complete when abolition was accomplished. The present Government were endeavouring to save something out of the fire, otherwise not a penny would be saved for local purposes; even ten per cent, was better than nothing. In addition to taking the land fund, the utmost economy and retrenchment would have to be exercised to extricate the colony from difficulties. Mr Burns moved that the Government during the recess make a survey of a branch railway line up the Kaikiorai Valley, Otago. The Government promised to attend to the matter, and the motion w T as negatived. The House went into Committee of Supply. There was a long discussion on the item, honorarium to Sir Julius Vogel for services in England, £3OOO. The vote was supported by Messrs Hunter, Macandrew, Eeynolds, Macfarlane, Evans Brown, Handers, Atkinson, Stout, Eeid, and Eowc, and opposed by Messrs Gisborne, Eees, Hodgkinson, Murray, Delatour, Montgomery, Grey Wood, and Sheehan. On a division, the item was carried by 33 to 21. The remainder of the ordinary estimates was then passed, and the House rose at 1.45 a.m.
