TO THE BURGESSES OF THE CITY OF CHRISTCHURCH. GENTLEMEN, —I have the honor to solicit your votes on my behalf for the ofiice of Mayor for the City of Christchurch. It is surely scarcely necessary for one who has lived so many years amongst you to stand forward at this late hour and assert his claims to your suffrages. It is, however, perhaps necessary that I should state that I have been elected three times your representative, and that, with the exception of Mr Ick, I am the oldest Councillor on the Board ; that Mr Ick having waived his claim to be nominated, I stand arrayed in opposition only to Mr Gapes, who has, as you are aware, already filled the ofiice for the past year. Bad sufficient reason been given for that gentleman’s re-election I might not now be a candidate, but agreeing in the almost universally expressed opinion that the only justification for a re-election to so distinguished an office would be services of a preeminent character, and failing to see that my opponent can fairly claim to have rendered any very remarkable service to the city, I had no hesitation in accepting the invitation which was recently presented to me by a large and influential body of my fellow citizens. I have had considerable experience in the working of Municipal institutions, and flatter myself that I can really serve you if lam elected. I have leisure, and a hearty desire to serve you, and will promise that at the conclusion of my term of office, if elected, I will hand back the trust to you untarnished.
